Thalamic (brain) tumor (in friend) and its sensory impact

I'm visiting an old friend who has had treatment for a tumor impinging on the thalamus. She had surgery and backup treatment of relatively very revolutionary kind (German health service).
She is mid treatment. All I know is that at the moment, it's has impinged so much on her sensory function, that she has v poor hearing and vision, sleeps a lot, eats OK (but needs to be fed). She is not in pain.

What I would like to ask is - what is the best way to be with her and communicate in the light of such a degradation of function. I am looking for an answer from someone who would really appreciate and understands the impact of such loss of sensory functions (i.e. from someone really knowing about the impact of such loss of functions)
Thanks
