doctor feels softball size lump, CT scan shows nothing

So my mom had a CT scan for a softball size mass in her lower right abdomen. It was found after it was discovered she had a hernia in groin area. Results come back from the CT scan and the lump didn't show up but benign bilateral cysts on her kidneys did. She can't personally feel the lump but it was immediatly felt by the doctor. She is going in tomorrow, and I imagine they will want to do a biopsy or MRI (she had an ultrasound already).

I want to allay her fears and mine, so was curious if you guys know if there are certain cancers that don't show up on CT scans. I was under the impression CT scans found most cancers and other harmful stuff, so I'm hopeful it isn't anything major. She did have to drink this gnarly milkshake thing to clean out her system before the CT scan so don't know if that did anything to mask the mass.

appreciate the help.

Re: doctor feels softball size lump, CT scan shows nothing

CT scans can miss some cancers, but only usually when they're very, VERY small...a softball sized lump would not be missed by a CT scan.

However, you did mention that she has a hernia. It's quite possible that the lump is a portion of her bowel that is protruding through the herniated spot. If the hernia is on the right side, then that's probably what's happening...and it means she needs to have hernia surgery fairly soon, before it becomes a major emergency.
