suffering from IBS for years

I have been suffering from IBS for years and have gone to various GI doctors, tried multiple medications and now due to the antibiotic have developed a yeast overgrowth! Go figure! So, now I am trying to find supplements to kill the yeast but I have gas no matter what I eat! Anyone out here find something that works!?

Re: Candida/Chronic Gas

i have been using oral nystatin that my dr gave me a prescription for and also grapefruit seed extract and extra virgin coconut oil. I still have some gas but it is not as bad as it was. I also eat lots of veggies and, although, they are healthy, they do create more gas. It is a catch 22. I think i have a systemic yeast problem because i have lots of other symptoms. If you don't have any other symptoms, i would try the nystatin for a while. Not just 10 days. I have been taking it now for about 8 weeks. My dr just gave me a new prescription. It is safe. Diflucan might be a little better but it is hard on the liver. You can't take that for to long. Another factor is that you should not be feeding the yeast with carbs. That is one of the problems that I am having. I am pretty good during the week but on the weekends I like to go out for dinner and have Vodka and also the bread basket and all the other good things that good restaurants have to offer. You weren't on antibiotics for IBS were you? Because, if so, I don't believe that is the right meds for that. I hope this info is at all helpful to you. Candida is tough to treat and supposedly it is mostly about this diet which is very difficult. Good luck. LaLa

Smile Re: Candida/Chronic Gas

Hi Lala:
Yes, I am on antibiotics for the IBS which was Dycyclomine and Hyosciamine. (Sp). They are the only things that seem to work to control the gas. However, that has caused a sensitivity to yeast and thrush on my tongue and a rash I cannot get rid of. So frustrating. I just ordered some probiotics (threelac) that i hear helps with candida. Normally probiotics make my gas worse. I heard the extra virgin olive oil helps and have added that into my diet as well as flax oil and omega 3.

I agree, it is a catch 22 because I do not eat any carbs besides quinoa or oatmeal that does not contain yeast. I love wine, but only induldge on sulfite free or vodka is okay as it is a grain that does not contain yeast. Beer and wine are the worst. I agree, the weekends come and it is hard. I also am pescatarian but do not eat dairy either as I am allergic...so pretty much vegan but add in seafood.

Do you have side affects with Nystatin? The ones I have tried make me loopy! So, I only take them when necessary. I have altered my diet in so many ways and I am at my wits end. I have even had a colonoscopy. I also have a gluten sensitivity too - go figure!

It is helpful - thank you so much and glad I am not the only one suffering!

Re: Candida/Chronic Gas

Gasnomore:
I looked up the meds you are taking for for the IBS. They are not antibiotics. The are basically meds to relax the stomach muscles to help with spasms and to reduce stomach acid. From my understanding of these drugs, they should not create yeast. I am not a dr though. Maybe you dont have IBS. Maybe all along it was a yeast problem. What are your symptoms of IBS? I forgot to mention that i take probiotics also. I also take flax and omega 3. Ii never heard of olive helping with gas. I use extra virgin coconut oil. I have tried threelac yrs ago. I did not give it a chance though because i started seeing a natural dr who had me on some of the things that he sold. As i said before. This is a battle. Let me know how you do on the threelac. It is possible that you have gas from the IBS and not yeast. Just some food for thought. (no carbs) LOL. Lala

Re: Candida/Chronic Gas

Hi Lala,

You are too funny.

You were never diagnosed with IBS were you? You just had bad gas and candida symptoms? I know you mentioned you could not be tested for candida. I have not either, although, everything I have researched has led me to believe I have it.

So far, extra virgin olive oil has been working. I do realize that eating alot of veggies (which I do) will cause gas but if it is smelly (like mine has been) than there is a bacteria issue. Yes, the pills I was taking for IBS were stomach relaxers, but also had to be prescribed by a doc and the side affects def. made me loopy. I hated taking them. I was also on medication on and off for some minor acne. So it could be a combination of yeast/Ibs because I have such a sensitivity and hard time digesting multiple foods. I am also in between jobs right now so am self medicating due to no insurance. I looked up the medication you mentioned, which sounds like exactly what I need...if only I could get a script.

Did any of the probiotics give you worse gas? And for the short amount of time you were on threelac did you have side affects? I will def. keep you posted on how I do! It's nice to have someone I can talk to so candidly with about these embarrasing issues!

Re: Candida/Chronic Gas

I am so confused with what I have. But i have no answers. It all started with an upper resp infection and bad cold 7 1/2 yrs ago. I went to the dr and he gave me an antibiotic. I was never the same again. I started to have CFS type of symptoms. Extreme lethargy and sick feeling. Then a few months later started with the chronic gas. It never went away. I went to gastro drs and had many tests and only had hiatal hernia and acid reflux. I got the diagnosis of IBS. I continued to feel sick and continued to go to drs. I cant explain the feeling. I just had an overall sick feeling. Once in a while i would get a low grade fever. My legs and arms felt very heavy. It seems difficult just to lift my legs to walk sometimes. I also had chest pain symptoms and heaviness in chest.

I went to the cardiologist. I had all the tests. Everything was fine. I went to at least three rheumys thinking maybe fibromyalgia. They did not think so. I can go on and on. But about three years after all that i started with tingling on the top of my head, eye twitching, neck pain and a feeling of being off balance. Also my ears felt full. I went to several ents. Nothing there other then some fluid in the ears due to my tubes maybe being a little off on the angle. I sometimes get pains in the ears. Just once in a while. Oh and also i feel sensitive to smells and also feeling of a runny nose and sometimes my eyes feel burny. Almost like allergys which i never had before.

Some days i also get very bad nausea and major indigestion and heartburn.I happen to have that right now. I was tested for lyme a few times and always negative. I did have my blood tested at a special lab ($500) not covered. On that test i had two bands positive and two bands indeterminate. I have been to so many natural drs trying to help me. I have spent thousands and thousands of dollars of my own money. I am broke. I have hashimotos and also in menopause now. I am taking bio identical hormones. I spend lots of money on supplements every month. I have also been to many neurologist because of the tingling and so far no answers with that. There is so much more that i am not mentioning because there is just so much. i am tired and need to go to sleep. But after all these drs i keep on thinking that this whole thing is systemic yeast and maybe a post viral syndrome type of condition. To answer your question about the gas and probiotics...i don't know because i am afraid not to take the probiotics. I don't want more gas then i already have because they are suppose to be a benefit. Also, pro-biotics are good for the immune system and i feel mine is weak. I would give the threelac a try. I have heard mixed reviews. I will talk to you later. Gotta go now.

Re: Candida/Chronic Gas

Wow, I don't even know where to begin on you symptoms because they seem to be all over the place. Which, I am sure you are aware of. I don't understand the lethargy and the imbalance...it's almost like Vertigo - I had a coworker that had to be hospitalized for that and was under so much stress - which stress can affect so many things! And if you went to that many specialists and they have tested you and cannot give you a reason, than I am sure you are left thinking.."what do I do"? The yeast can affect so many things in your body and one of the reasons my digestive system was out of whack!

I also went to a natropathic doctor and he did a scan on me and it showed that I have an allergy to dairy, sensitivity to yeast and gluten. I also had a parasite and was on supplements to kill that. My main symptoms with IBS are: gas/bloating/constipation/diarhea. It alternates, some days I cannot go and others I can't leave the bathroom. The olive oil and adding oregano spice to almost all of my foods has helped tremendously. The last time I tried the probiotics it did make my symptoms worse so that is why I was hesitant to try again. I feel that I am a guinea pig - I will try anything and a doctor's best patient because I will do exactly as they say. My IBS symptoms started when I went on that crazy atkins diet in college like all of my other friend's did to drop some lbs. I now cannot digest animal fat. Prior to atkins I ate a ton of carbs so I think I put my body through too many extremes. Physically, I am now in the best shape of my life, internally, I am a 30 year old in an 80 year old body!

My grandpa takes the same IBS meds as me. My grandma also had chron's disease - I was also tested for that and it came back negative. So.....the battle continues.

What does the coconut oil do for you? DO you take with every meal or just in the morning/night? I am sure that is hard to carry to work! LOL
