Why does my 91 yr. old father do the following?

My dad developed a certain behavior while eating, and I've never said anything to him about it because it's obviously just something he's doing because he's getting older. Whenever he eats, when he brings the fork/spoon to his mouth, he holds the fork/spoon up to his mouth for about a minute or two. He sorta puckers his lips at the same time and shakes a little. Then he puts the food in. Does anyone know what causes this? It has nothing to do with the food being too hot, because he does it with his cereal as well. Of course at his age, I've noticed quite a few changes over time. Thx.

Re: Why does my 91 yr. old father do the following?

Hello Tamara2011,

Please consider having him see his primary care physician and explain to him(on the side) that you are noticing a few points of concern.

I say his primary because that person is most familiar with his history and by certification, most qualified.

Respectfully
Phoenix

Your Dad may have a medical condition that causes shaking. He hesitates in order to get coordinated enough so his hand and mouth will make contact without missing and food going everywhere.

Sometimes shaking may not take place until the arms are in a certain position, such as raising food to his mouth.

Non-Essential tremors and Parkinson's Disease cause shaking. Other conditions can cause shaking too.

Best to have him checked out by his primary doctor.

Re: Why does my 91 yr. old father do the following?

You might want to make sure he doesnt have a swallowing problem as his hesitation may be fear of choking??? If you hold a position for long enough your muscles begin to get tired and then you will start to shake. If he is that old he probably doesnt have much muscle tone in his arms. He could have had a small stroke (TIA)too that could impair swallowing.
