carpal in both hands? - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Message Board

I have numbing and tingling in both hands, particularly at night. This has been happening in my left hand for about six months, in my right hand for several weeks. From what I read, this sounds like CT, although I haven't read anything that talks about it happening in both hands.

Then, this weekend, both hands got itchy, then very swollen, then extremely tender and sore. I could hardly bend my fingers! I took tons of Advil and got through the weekend. After about three days, most of the swelling is gone, but they're still tender and numb.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I would have thought I could have CT in one hand, but both? And what's with the swelling?

WOW wierd stuff. If your carpal tunnel is a symptom of something else (thyroid for instance) then you could have it in both hands. Check my message below under "non-evasive treatment" for a therapy that works for carpal tunnel.
Mine was from thyroid problems and now they are being looked after the swelling has gone down. Tender and sore??? Don't know about that unless you were doing something heavy with them you don't usually do.

I have CT in both hands and also had the surgery on both. Tingeling and numbness were a BIG part of it,plus falling asleep feeling when I would push my daughters stroller.Some swelling but only to the point of not being able to wear my rings sometimes. I would have it checked out,plus the thyroid because I still want to do that myself,havent had the time.Good luck!

It's certain possible to have CT in both hands. I did, with classic symptoms of numbness in three and half fingers of each. Surgery on both hands (about six weeks apart) fixed it.

I was told that doing nothing could lead to permanent nerve damage, so putting off investigation of the problem is a bad idea.

In my right hand I have an unatrophied medial artery, which means there's less space than usual. I didn't check, but it seems likely that I'd be the same in the left hand, which would explain why I should have had CT in both.

Surgery has left me with two almost invisible scars, and a slight reduction in grip strength, though not enough to bother me.

I suffer from thyroid problems and had surgery for CTS. The swelling in your hands is of concern. If you are in constant pain, the could be CTS with another condition known as RSD. Get yourself checked. Also VIOXX or Celebrax can help, stay off the Advil (it will cause internal bleeding).
