Numb right hand and fingers...

Hi,

Well for the last month or so, I noticed that my right hand would often fall asleep when I was sleeping and I would have to shake it out often. Didnt think much of it. Then, since last Friday morning, my fingers have all been numb on my right hand. I have a little pain of pain in the forearm and shoulder and have some pain in my arm when I wash my hair for example. I went to the doc and she "thinks" its carpal tunnel even though I pointed out that ALL of my fingers were numb, including the pinky. She didnt do an EMG, just made me fold my hands a certain way, and said seems like carpal tunnel. So she gave me a splint to wear for two weeks and then have a follow up appointment with an orthopedic surgeon... Does this sound like carpal tunnel? Does anyone here have CONSISTENT numbness that doesnt shake out at all?? Does it sound like I would need surgery?

Re: Numb right hand and fingers...

Yes. I had the same exact symptoms. Had carpal tunnel surgery on left hand in 1982 and on right hand 1994, both doing great!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good luck.

I am barely 21 and I am having these same symptoms. I am in so much pain and I have become nerve wracked because i do not have insurance or money to see a doctor and I couldnt find anyone with the same symptoms until your post. First it was the falling asleep of my hand and as of last night my hand, in no other way can i find to explain this, feels as if its permantly in a bucket of Icyhot. It is on fire and freezing at the same time but not just my hand anymore, i feel the pain now from every finger to my elbow.
do you think this could be the same as your pain?

Re: Numb right hand and fingers...

One test you can try out either by yourself or with someone else is to hold a piece of paper between your thumb and index finger and either you or better yet someone try to pull it out, if they are able to pull it out without much resistance, then that is one sign that you might have carpal tunnel. My surgeon tried it with 2 of his assistants and then me and i could not hold the paper back. He said that is proof.

This sounds pretty bad... and uncomfortable! but also..

There could be other reasons that you are having these symptoms. In CTS, you would experience pain and "pins/neeles"/tingling on the thumb, index, and middle finger (and palm may be included). Alot of doctors just dismiss hand symptoms like you all have stated to just be CTS, but the hand is more complicated than that. THat's why they have specialists for it.

Wear a splint in the meantime to rest your wrists and protect the nerve.
Make sure you are not wearing the splint all the time. Take it off to move your wrist so it wont get stiff. Take anti inflammatory meds like advil, if you are not allergic or anything...

The other possible reasons for your symptoms could be:
1. Compression of the median nerve in the forearm (pronator syndrome)
2. Circulation problems in the forearm
3. Thoracic outlet syndrome (compression of nerve or artery in neck/first rib area) just to name a few...
You should follow up with a doctor. Ideally, an orthopedic hand surgeon. I know it's hard not having health insurance. Find out from your state if you qualify for asisstance, like medicaid or something like that.
Wish I could help you more... Good Luck!
