Question Post Op Carpal Tunnel Surgery...

In April this year I had CT surgery done on both wrists/hands. Was told about 6 weeks I should be well on my way to full use of hands but although I can type and do light housework my scars are still very sensitive especially if knocked by accident and I still can't.. when stretching (eg waking up)...open my hands. I have to keep them closed as the pulling in the thumb pads is still really sore and feels like they will snap. The other big problem is in the wrists themselves. They cramp up quite badly and I have to move them again to get rid of it and is quite painful too.

I am hoping if any of you out there have had it that this is normal even though I am now heading into my 10th week since the ops.

Obviously due to all of this I am looking for different work real light duty stuff now...as I tried one day doing van deliveries and in 5 hours my palms were on fire again and has taken the past 2 weeks to recover from that day! So the frustration is enormous at the moment and I am slightly hesitant with the type of work to look for and still have to think of everything involved in each job I apply for...even the things you took for granted..can be a real chore!
Any input would be welcome. I have goggled a lot of information and it seems to vary from 2 days after op to 1 year for recovery and what is the wrist pain/cramps??!!
Thanks for any info in advance.

Re: Post Op Carpal Tunnel Surgery...

As for the area where the stitches are it is normal to have pain there. I was on a golf course with my husband (I didn't play, just watched) and we were driving around in the golf cart. We hit a bump and my stitch area came down hard on the armrest. This was 2 months after surgery. And yes, it hurt quite a bit. As for your hand not opening up that is not normal. Have you done any physical therapy after surgery? You should have been stretching and doing exercises to keep that area limber. I would see a physical therapist if I were you and ask them if you can improve your range of motion and be able to open your hand up more. I use a hot wax machine and dip my hands in for a second or two to get the wax on them and then put them in a plastic bag and then using a heating pad let them stay wrapped up with that for about 15 minutes per hand. IT makes them feel so good. That could help to loosen your hands up and then try to do some stretching after the hot wax treatment. Good luck and keep us informed on how you do.
