Addison's disease and celiac disease

Someone from another board has reported that Addison's disease and celiac disease are somehow related (one causes the other???). Anyone know about this? Just curious.

Re: Addison's disease and celiac disease

Thanks Chris and Losec. I am interested because I like being up on information pertaining to Addison's disease. I guess I am one of the lucky ones (so far anyway ). I have primary Addison's disease which is autoimmune. It's just good to know the research.

Re: Addison's disease and celiac disease

I don't know about celiac specifically, but malabsorption syndromes, yes. About a month after my secondary adrenal insufficiency was diagnosed, my gastroenterologist discovered I wasn't digesting fat. A battery of tests--including those for celiac inside and out, ugh--revealed no cause for the malabsorption. Nothing is wrong with my pancreas, which is what they suspect when someone doesn't diagnose fat at this level.

They retested me after a few months on the hydrocortisone replacement, and found some improvement in my malabsorption. It isn't gone, but it is improving. The theory my gastroenterologist and endocrinologist have determined is that the adrenal insufficiency caused the malabsorption, and that it will continue to improve with continued treatment.

We hope...

Of course, we're hoping my adrenal glands will start working again, too. Heh...

Time will tell.
