Re: Link Hypothyroidism and Celiac Disease?
Your observation is right on.
There is a much higher incidence of thyroid disorder in celiacs than in the normal population. This has been well documented in numerous Italian studies (Italy & Europe in general are decades ahead of the USA in testing for & understanding celiac disease). In celiac children, for example, approx 25% are either hypo or occasionally hyper, and usually this is autoimmune thyroid disease.
Celiac disease is understood to be genetic, or at least there is a genetic predisposition towards it. As I understand it, the same genes that predispose one to autoimmune celiac disease can predispose one towards other AI disease, like AI thyroid disease.
IMO that does add up to a hereditary link.
