Angry H. Pylori? Celiac Disease? Something else?

I have had some terrible stomach issues in the past few weeks.

I've always had a severely sensitive stomach, and am an incredibly picky (and wholesome) eater. A few weeks ago, I got stomach flu -- I had it for over a WEEK -- no diarrhea, no vomiting (I am emetophobic so I held it down). Weeks later, my stomach has flared up again. Same kind of symptoms, but not much nausea -- bloating, burping, gas, abdominal pain, cramps, back pain. I just had a bunch of blood taken and am EXHAUSTED but I usually get more sleep. I am not thin or underweight, I have lost a bit in the last few weeks between stomach flu and everything else.

I asked to be tested for h.pylori but my doctor also suggested celiac's (it can start up after an infection, and I already have one autoimmune disorder, psoriasis, so I guess I am prone to it). Come to think of it, the last two times I became really ill were after eating whole wheat pizza and whole wheat pasta. Maybe that is just in my head. Maybe I am imagining things. It could be the case.

I basically want to crawl into a hole and die. What else could this be? Again, I have always had a sensitive stomach....I consume a lot of Maalox, I eat whole chunks of ginger, I was on PPIs for awhile but they stopped working and I had the worst acid rebound of all time...I am so tired of this, I just want an answer, I know many of you have it worse than me but I am so afraid of food and I feel like I am never going to be right again.

Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. I just started taking gluten out of the picture last night (my blood test was early this morning so I don't think a false negative is an issue) -- I won't know until Friday about the results but I wanted to post here because I know some of you really know a lot about this stuff. Again, I have NO diarrhea and NO vomiting -- my doctor said this is difficult because I have no bowel issues. I am very regular, never any diarrhea or constipation.

I have a very stressful job, and my panic disorder causes a lot of my issues, but I know that I am not able to make myself this ill (just by being high strung).

Sorry to ramble. Help, please!

Re: H. Pylori? Celiac Disease? Something else?

Hi...I just wanted to write to say that I can totally relate to what you're going through. My stomach has been very unhappy the last few weeks, and I've been diligently trying to figure out why. Similar to your situation, I've been dealing with chronic bloating, gas, abdominal pain, stomach gurgling/churning, and nausea...which all occur after I've eaten a meal. In addition to that, I also have been having bowel issues...mainy loose stools, and incomplete elimination. I'm at my wit's end. I often am afraid to eat because I fear getting these awful symptoms after each meal. I just made an appointment to see my primary doctor and I'm hoping he will refer me to a gastro doc for some testing. I've been suspecting for awhile now, that it might be some kind of sudden food intolerance. I've been consuming a lot of whole grain products lately, so in the back of my mind I've been thinking Celiac's or a gluten-intolerance. My hubby thinks it could be an ulcer or some kind of bacterial overgrowth thing...so I'm not sure. All I know is that it sucks feeling like this! It's starting to affect every aspect of my life. I haven't slept well in weeks because the stomach gurgling/churning keep me awake in discomfort. It almost feels like the food I'm eating is not being digested properly...and my stomach is working overtime (thus the gurgling noises and churning sensations) to digest food. Ughhh...I so desperately want to feel better than this!

I hope you and your doctor are able to figure out what is troubling your tummy!

Linda

Re: H. Pylori? Celiac Disease? Something else?

There's over 200 different symptoms associated with celiac - including not have any symptoms at all - so it's hard to tell just looking at the "surface" symptoms.

Signs of chronic malnutrition would point to celiac . . . infertility, early onset arthritis, osteoporosis, poor night vision, bowing of the long bones, short stature, pins and needle sensations in hands and feet, chronic canker sores, discolored teeth and unexplained anemia.

Celiac has been associated with other autoimmune disorders but not psoriasis. (At least not statistically, doesn't mean you can't have psoriasis and celiac) When autoimmune diseases tend to occur together they're called "clusters". In the celiac cluster there's juvenile arthritis, type 1 diabetes, sjogren's syndrome, autoimmune hypo/hyper thyroid and vitiligo.

My husband is diabetic and was recently diagnosed with "slow stomach" disorder, his stomach does not empty like it use to. He feels blotted right away. They placed him on Reglan 5 mg after each meal. Just today I wrote to his doctor to see if they have another medicine or can increase the dosage. He has had H.pylori too, six months ago, we think we got rid of it, but we will not know until we complete the lab work that due now. You have to do lab work 6 months after the treatment. I would be aggressive and over exaggerate your symptoms so you can be seen by a specialist. I hope my blurp helped.

Re: H. Pylori? Celiac Disease? Something else?

I actually don't have any problems with emptying. I am very regular when I eat, and never have any loose stools or anything.

I just don't know if eating is worth it anymore. I'm exhausted. Now I have another cold, so I am dealing with two things at once. I went to a gastro last year and without even examining me, as soon as I told him I had panic disorder, he told me I was doing it to myself -- "nerves" -- and told me to take more medication. There's no way, anxiety or none, I could ever make myself this ill. I'm not even that stressed out right now!

I do have a lot of sores in my mouth. I don't know if that is from having a cold or something else. I usually only get one at a time. I have three now.

Whatever it is, I don't think I am malnourished but I have definitely lost some weight. Not sure how much. 10-15 lbs in the past few weeks, maybe.

Re: H. Pylori? Celiac Disease? Something else?

Ah, slow stomach - that's gastroparesis. I did have that for awhile, ugh. I lost 30 pounds from that, I was put on Reglan too and it did help. After 4 or 5
months it seemed to "fix" the problem and I didn't need it anymore. That was several years ago, I have had short bouts (less than a week) with it since.

I should point out that one of the many symptoms of celiac is anxiety. Celiac causes some major neurological effects, these often show up before gastrointestinal symptoms.

Looking back now I see I had anxiety, an unsteady gait and clumsiness (called gluten ataxia) years before I was diagnosed. Besides anxiety, irritability, mood instability and seizures, it can cause calcium deposits on the brain. It's even been implicated as a cause of dementia.

Some people just have a family history with cankers sores and it's got nothing to do with celiac. The canker sores (aphthous ulcer) in celiac are sometimes called aphthous stomatitis and it's not the number you get, it's that fact that you keep getting them, they're chronic. (and provoked by gluten ingestion - while all the other celiacs can tell if they've been "glutened" by their stomachs, my mother can tell because she gets a canker sore!)
