Back Surgery for child w/ CP - Cerebral Palsy Message Board

I was told yesterday that my son needs back surgery for his scoliosis. His spine is tremendously curved! I couldn't believe the X-rays I saw. The dr. wants to place a rod in his back to help the curvature of his spine. He also has a dislocated hip and the dr. said the back surgery was less strenuous than the hip surgery. With the hip surgery he wants to cut his femor out. He is 15 and has never been able to walk, talk, or sit-up on his own. I'm wondering if anyone else is out there whose had the surgery and the amount of pain they went through. Please email me at [removed]

I have cerebral palsy and I teach children with special needs. One of the students in one of the classes where I work had the same surgery that you described. I believe that the student was out of school for a couple of weeks, and then had restricted activities for a week or so when she came back to school. Unfortuneately, I do not know the amount of pain that the student experienced. (By the way, I also have scoliosis, but my curvature has not ever worsened. Otherwise, I am told that the surgery would have been done.)

Did you go through with the surgery? My daughter has a hugely curved spine, but I am very weary of any more surgery. She has started to have seizures that seem to be associated with her positioning when sleeping, so I may have to have something done in spite of not wanting her cut up any more. So many of these surgeries have proven to be of no help in the long run. I'd be interested to know how things turned out.

I have been told my daughter will need back surgery at some time. She cannot walk, talk, or sit either. Her surgeon says it is a difficult operation and doesn't want to do it until her condition becomes life threatening. I would like to know how your son gets on. My thoughts are with you.

I would go ahead with the surgeries. This will be very tough on your son and you, but with the modern medical advances in Orthopedic surgery today, I think the increased quality of life will be worth it. Your key statement here is "He is 15 and has never been able to walk, talk, or sit-up on his own".
