Question should I have ds checked for cerebal palsy?

I am new here. I have a question about my ds who is almost 13 months. I have recently noticed that he drags his right foot when walking. He has been walking outside with little leather shoes and the right one is very scuffed. It is not totally obvious. He does not walk independantly, but will only hold on and walk. He has been pulling up and creeping for almost 4 months now, but will not walk alone. We noticed that when he crawls his left foot always gets pulled up into his pant leg. He has also leans on his right side with his arm limp from time to time while in the high chair. He ususally uses both hands, he claps, but on occassion he does not use the right arm.

He has not missed any developmental milestones, but I am worried about his lopsidedness. As a smaller infant he was constantly clenching his fists. He has always been a very tense baby. He cries and gets very angry since birth. He does not use many words... mom, dad & kitty and uses them very rarely.

I should also give some history... he was born at 36 weeks, I was induced due to preeclampsia, he had the cord around his neck and an apgar of 1. He was also ABO incompatible with janundice. He stayed in the nicu for 7 days. He was not assisted with breathing, although he "grunted" shortly after birth which is why he went to the nicu. My grandmother's brother had cerbal palsy.

Should I have him checked? Is there advantage to getting him early treatment? I don't want to be a paranoid mom (this is our first) but if there is anything I can do to help him I want to do whatever I can. What is the best frist steps?

I can't say if he has CP or not, but you should have him checked, just to make sure. The earlier the treatment starts, the better the results are.

It sounds like he might be havin pronation or supination issues with his left foot Generally though if he would have a side prefrence I think it would be the consisitent side. example uses right hand less and drags right foot. Definately get it checked out. Have they measured legs to see if they are the same size? that happens more than you realize too.

Thumbs up Re: should I have ds checked for cerebal palsy?

Hi there!

I'm new here too and this is my first post but I am a mom to a 22 month old with CP.

I would say a resounding YES>. Have it checked!!!! I can NOT hurt. Early intervention can be a tremendous help. The intesity and speech don't sound like red flags to me but the lopsidedness and dragging a foot sure do.

Cord around neck is a possible cause.. but regardless.. all these things can be helped whether its technically CP or not.

I would start with a pediatric Neurologist and a Pediatric orthopedist (for the foot measureing stuff..etc).

Your grandmother's brother should not figure in.. CP is not hereditary.. It is cause by some event before, during or after birth

They may tell you "he's fine!" - but at least you will know.
HTH!
let us knwo what you find out
Laurie
