What 'caused' your CP?

Hi everyone. Reading that post from Shell and the replies from Steffers and Hope got me wondering... How many people who are young adults and older know what caused their CP (being a preemie, birth trauma, cord around neck...etc). That baby on the stomach at 9 hrs old is making me so angry right now!!! ugh.

Of the 6 or 7 kids I know with CP (all under age 6), most know the 'cause' of the CP. Usually preemie, or preemie twins, or two were born with cords around neck, etc. Only Seth and one other little friend of ours have the 'totally don't know why' situation. Now our friend is spactic quad. and is considerably less functional than Seth (my son). Both were full term babies, no birth trauma, healthy pregnacies and such. Nothing shows on their MRI's. Just up and started having a hard time sitting up around 9 months old.

I had a developmental ped. one time say "Yeah, more people DON"T why know than do know why". I think he is wrong. I think more people know. I guess I can't let it drive me mad. I just wonder if most people knew the cause of their CP.

Re: What 'caused' your CP?

When I was born there was a blood clot in the umbilical cord and that stopped the oxygen flow to my brain. I guess the dr. sent the cord to pathology and found there was an extra blood vessel in the cord. The dr. also said he thought the clot induced labor and if I wasn't born when I was I probably would have been stillborn. Very interesting how it worked out.

Re: What 'caused' your CP?

I have a 3 year old who was a full term baby, normal pregnancy, vaginal uneventful delivery. We have no idea what caused his cp. He is affected mildly, but does have cp.
So, you are not alone...

Re: What 'caused' your CP?

Hmmm, let's mom went into labor when she was about 5 months pregnant, stayed in the hospital for the next two months trying to prevent labor, then had me VERY early (my birthday is February 3rd, and I was supposed to be born on April 27th) by C-section...because my mom developed an infection in her uterus, I guess because her water had broken such a long time ago. I weighed, like, half a pound or something (I wonder if that's where I got my toughness from? ).

SO obviously I was a tough pregnancy/delivery, and I know being a preemie is a factor too. I dunno what caused the labor in the first place (my doctors/nurses kinda stunk--I have a big scar on my leg from where they let a needle pop out of my vein and kill the muscle in the area when I was in the NICU, so they probably didn't know what caused it in the first place) but maybe I just wanted to be difficult.

Hi there, I'm new to the boards. I was born 2 months prematurely. My Mother also had a very fast delivery and I came down the birth canal so quickly that I stopped breathing when I came out. I also had many seizures at about 9 months old. I was diognosed at 9 months old! My Mother told me I cried alot, more so then the adverage baby.

Mine seems to be different than everyone else's. I was 9 months, caught a flu, fever spiked and went into seizure. My fever was around 110 F when I got to the hospital.

Re: What 'caused' your CP?

My story is a bit different. My told mr how I got cp. 39 (almost) my mom went into labour with me and took herself to the tiny hospital that only had a few doctors and nurses. The nurse came in and seem my mom pushing me out. The nurse got scared as the doctor was not in the house and she did not know what she should do. She seem the crown of my head out and she put an ice pack on my cerebrum. This caused a lack of oxygen to my brain immediately. My aunt tells me that my mom removed the ice pack right away and asked the nuse why she had done that. The nurse replied she tried to stop the baby from being born until a doctor came in.

Yes, this sounds wierd but I guess this is what happened. My aunt seen the nurse from time to time and always asks about me to this day. I giess she feel guilty. And that she should!

Re: What 'caused' your CP?

We have yet to know the true reason WHY? My child has cysts that im told are chemically formed before delivery. I dont think we will truely ever know...its so frustrating.

Re: What 'caused' your CP?

My son was a term baby but was injured during L&D. He had a compressed cord for about 7 hours according the the fetal strips and the doctor did a high forcep delivery (found out later that these are never done bc of the brain damage it causes) which fractured his skull causing a brain bleed.

Re: What 'caused' your CP?

its odd what i have been told about my babys CP. I was induced at 37 weeks, i was told she was vey large, she delivered weighing only a small 5 lbs...her heart rate dropped several times from 180 to like 80 or so..aother than that the delivery was good..doctors have told me that she had a stroke when i was 7 months pregnant and in the hospital with the flu. seems hard to believe though. She has cysts that, from what i have read are chemical formed, they just happen, nothing causes them. so your not alone in the fact of not knowing, we have heard different things from different doctors. I dont think we will ever truely know.

Re: What 'caused' your CP?

I was a preemie. I think born at 6-7 months. I do know that when I was born, I weighed 2 pounds. This is a big factor in me having CP but I also think it was parental problems, ie. mom being stressed out for whatever reason, my father drinking. Those things and other similar problems can affect a baby's health.
