Questions about post-op hip surgery - Cerebral Palsy Message Board

My 6 yr. old Grandson is going in to have hip surgery this Thursday. His left hip bone needs to be placed back into the hip socket which needs to be reconstructed because there's not much of a socket. The femur has to be cut just below the joint so it can be positioned then everything will be put back together again with plates and screws. His other hip just needs a little shaving on the hip bone. After that he will be in a body cast from his chest to his toes. My big question is: Has anyone out there had their child go through this before. and are there any pointers you can give us such as what to expect as far as PAIN and how do they manage it after surgery and when he goes home. The Doctor says he will benefit much from the surgery and if he doesn't have it he will likely develop scoliosis down the road. He has been scooting around in a "gait trainer" but doesn't seem to take actual steps. He also is in a "Move" program at the school he goes to for disabled kids.

Grandson doing o-k. He came home from hospital today. He had both of his hips operated on. He's on heavy duty pain medications. Hope for a quick recovery!!

Grandson had a very rough time. In body cast for 6 weeks. He developed a bed sore the first week he came home. Had to go back to hospital to have part of the cast cut out. All in all he got acustomed to the cast o-k. He just went back yesturday to Children's Hospital Oakland and had the cast taken off. He hurts of course but I think he's relieved it's off! Now we just have to concentrate on healing time and therapy. I tell him it's all "up hill" from here. Thanks for asking about him by the way...
