| self stim issues in 21 year old CP male
We have a 21 year old son with CP who is non-ambulatory and uses a manual wheelchair. He is somewhat verbal but does understand what you say to him and will follow simple directions. He has some degree of MR. We have always had issues with masturbation which he has done for several years now. He is now in a very good day hab program and doing well but he continues to have self-stim issues many times throughout the day. We have tried to redirect him, give him a toy or some activity to do, but it only distracts him for a few seconds and then he goes back to masturbating. We have told him he may do this in the privacy of his own bed/room and he seems to understand but this does not stop him. Does anyone have any experience on how to control/stop this behavior when it is done in public ?
