Gastrointestinal Flu - Children's Health Message Board

My son is ten and has been up since 2:30 this morning vomiting with diarrhea. It is now 1:00 in the afternoon and he has a fever of 101.8 and I am concerned. He took an hour nap at 11:00 and is now having ice chips. He wants to drink heavily, but I am making him take spoonfuls because he keeps throwing it up. My kids have never had fever with a stomach flu and that is what concerns me. Should I be?

You're not neurotic at all! I have a true phobia when it comes to the stomach virus anyway. My girls both had it; my 9 year old had a low grade fever (about 100-101) and my 2 year old had a 5 day fever of about 102. Just remember that the fever is a good sign that he is fighting the infection. I wouldn't let it go for longer than 2 days without calling his doc. My oldest had her fever for about 24-48 hours and then it lifted. Hope this helps. All this crazy stuff going around is enough to make any mom neurotic!!!!

Keep in mind that the "stomach flu" as such is not actually the flu, but rather a gastrointenstinal virus or infection that commonly occurs about the same time as the flu.

That being said, regular flu can cause GI problems especially in children. I would make sure that your son is staying hydrated, as this is a major complication for the flu and can weaken the immune system.
