Exclamation 16 pound 4 month old -- Normal??

Is this normal... My son just turned 4 months old and is at 16 pounds, at 2 months he was at 14.6 pounds, I am scared he is over weight, I keep asking my peditrician and she says he is fine, but a friend of mines son was at 20 pounds at 8 months and they told her to put him on a diet!! I am a first time mother and am not sure what to do... he doesnt eat cereal, or baby food. He only drinks 6 to 7 ounces of a bottle at 7am, 11am, 3pm, 7pm, and 11pm... He can sit up and crawl around on the floor, so his weight isnt affecting his movement, but he has to wear 6-9 month onesies... HELP!!

it sounds normal to me....what was his birth weight? does he look fat? ie fat pads...or is he solid....re clothes, i think they make them smaller than the average baby in this day and age...he sounds like he is healthy!good luck

Re: 16 pound 4 month old -- Normal??

yes i would say it is normal....i was told that a baby is supposed to triple his/her weight by five months...then when they start moving around on their own crawling/walking they will lose it anyway....but from where i stand i would say i wouldn't worry.......i have an 11month old and he is 25 pounds which is normal for his height and age.....and not only that your son is more than likely going through a growth spurt.......

His Birthweight was 7lbs 3 oz at 19 1/2 inches, and he is now 23 inches long at 16 pounds.. he really doesnt look allll that fat, but he does have rolls down his legs but not on his arms, stomach and all... I really am hoping that its just becuase he is a short baby and will be short, my husband and i are both short ppl... Thank-you for your reply!! I am a 1st time mom and going nuts!

There is a wide range of "normal" weights for babies, and comparing yours to the size of any other babies will make you crazy! The pediatrician is seeing your child on a regular basis, and if he/she says the weight is fine, relax! Your doctor's word is a lot more reliable than word of mouth on what other peoples' doctors may have said or done with other babies. Your baby is an individual - he may grow faster now and more slowly later. Just remember to listen to your own doc and enjoy your baby.

He is fine. Unless your stuffing him with cheetoes then don't worry. All babies grow differently and putting them on diets is absurd. HeatherW.

Sounds like he's eating just fine. Sounds like he's healthy.

My son has a digestive problem and needs extra calories (125 ccs of formula per kilo). Think the doctor told me a normal child needs about 110 ccs of food per Kilogram of weight. 2.2 pounds equals a kilo. about 30 ccs equals an ounce. Don't worry about it and enjoy your child.

Oh, and there's a 5.5 month old at day care. She weighs 25 !!! Pounds. Poor girl has legs that look like fireplace logs.

Re: 16 pound 4 month old -- Normal??

My son was 19lbs at 3 MONTHS!!! Dont' worry about a thing! He is now 4 and has grown out of that. Don't get me wrong, he is still in the 85-90th percentile, but that is for height and weight, so no one is worried. I can see his ribs when he has his shirt off, so I can't imagine what the "normal" weighted kids look like.

Isaiah stayed at 19lbs for like 3 months, and then grew gradually. Don't be too concerned. BTW, is he breastfed? I don't remember reading that anywhere. My son was, so the dr. said that it was just good milk . Just love that baby, and squish him alot!!!

Re: 16 pound 4 month old -- Normal??

I saw this and thought NO WORRIES!! My first was 9lbs 11oz and 3 weeks early and by the time he was 3 months he was a hair short of 21 pounds! LOL He was a sumo - but also tall. My second son was 7lbs 13oz at 5 weeks premature and was 28 pounds at 9 1/2 months. And that is pretty much all breastmilk - on demand. Now that hes walking he has maintained around 30 pounds and is 14 1/2 months. My oldest that was FAT is now tall and slim - he is just over 3 and is about 47 pounds and 40 something inches. Very solid but not fat.

They totally slim out when they start being mobile.

You are just feeding him well. Be proud of that.

Re: 16 pound 4 month old -- Normal??

I had a 17 lb. 4 month old. He's now a 20 lb. 8 month old, so alot of times their weight gain slows drastically after 6 months. He's always been long and just a big boy. Babies are all built so differently.

My son is 13 lbs and he is 4.5 months he was only 5 14 at birth so I thing your boy is just fine. I saw a boy who is 4 months old this past weekend and he is 23 pounds now that I would worry about - the parents didn't seem concerned but I guess it depends on the doctor.

Re: 16 pound 4 month old -- Normal??

My son Syd was born on the 29 November and is now coming upto 4.5 months. He was 10lb2oz at birth (thankfully emergency c-section under general anaesthetic) and now weighs 20lb. He has just got his first 2 teeth (in the last fortnight) and although he is attempting to sit up, he just can't manage it. Don't worry about your babies weight/development. They all come on at their own rate.

Anyway fat little babies are fab, they soon run it off when they're up and about.

Enjoy
