Seizure in 18 mo old

Last week my 18 month old daughter had a seizure. She was rhythmically twitching, looking off to the right, and drooling. I called an ambulance, and once at the hospital they ran an Xray wich was fine, and Scan for brain injury wich was also fine, and fianlly a spinal tap, wich was negative for menegitis and encephalitis.

She had recently gotten over a nasty stomache flu, and they determined after all those tests, it was probably just due to low sodium, and potasium levels. Not uncommon with low blood sugar levels. After a few days of rehydration through IV fluids, they sent her home.

Has anyone else heard of low levels of certain things causing seizures? If so, for you or your child, did it reoccur?

I was SO worried, I was afraid I was going to lose my baby. She has a twin sister, and I was afraid for her to grow up without her, they are so close. I dont want anyone to feel what I did for the 7 hours it took for their tests and for her to finally wake up and smile and cry again. Hydration and vitamins are SO important, now that we are in the middle of summer, AND where I live at least, the nastiest flue bug going around!!

No. As a matter of fact, there was not even a fever while she was ill with the stomache virus, so they rules out a febrile seziure right away.

Hmm I've never heard of it [removed]. If it happened to you I'm sure it's happened to someone else's little one as well. Good luck.

Re: Seizure in 18 mo old

Dear hisgirltooo,
My daughter had a seizure when she was 13 days old, when I called the pediatrician after(it occured in the car) she suspected it was caused by an electrolyte imbalance(sodium levels being off, etc). The Dr said an imbalance is a common cause of seizures in young ones(along with febrile seizures-high fever).Although after doing tests they found she had a seizure disorder.Did they do an EEG? This is important to have done to rule out a seizure disorder & should be looked at by a pediatric neurologist.Kids brain waves are different than adults. It would not be uncommon to have just this 1 seizure though(especially caused by an imbalance), lots people will have at least 1 seizure in their lives.Good Luck to you. It's a scary experience to watch your child go thru this.Best wishes to you both.
P.S. ask your doc about giving your daughter pedialyte or gatorade if she is ill again, they help restore your levels.
