Question Fifth Disease? Pregnancy?

My daughter has a rash that is red with white non- circular bumps. It itches and it has spread about three times the amt. within a few hours. Is this just hives? She had a fever a week ago for about three hours. She threw up and seemed fine after so I thought nothing of it. It was strange. Now she broke out in the rash and I'm freaking! She seems to be fine. She says she doesn't feel good but I she won't really tell me where. She doesn't have a fever. I'm pregnant too so it worries me even more. I know fifth disease can come with a rash and can harm a fetus. Does anyone know what this could be? What should I do? Wait until morning or go to the ER?

Re: Rash on 3 year old????

I'd take her in to the doc. I don't think an ER visit is necessary. My son had chicken pox while I was in my first trimester (and he got the vaccine 2 months before) but I had already had them pretty bad when I was little, so my baby is fine. Since you say she had a fever and vomited a couple weeks ago, I'd be inclined to say she has some sort of viral rash illness. Most of them take 14 to 21 days to break out. I'm sure she will be just fine, but you need to get her diagnosed so you can find out what you've been exposed too. Fifths Disease is more dangerous in pregnancy that chicken pox and some others.

You can tell alot about which one it is by the look of the rash. Where is it now, and where did it begin? How is it spreading? From one location all over, or in patches? How large and raised are the bumps? What does she look like this morning compared to last night? If the bumps look puss or fluid filled and are kind of like tear drop shaped "whiteheads" it's probably chicken pox. Especially if she's breaking out in "patches," they have spread quite a bit over night, and the older bumps look slightly different, bigger, or in a different stage from the newer bumps.

I pretty much diagnosed my DS when he had chicken pox by looking up these questions on the web. Then by the time I got to the doctor, (who swore he hadn't seen a case of chicken pox in 4 years!) I knew what was wrong with him.

Re: Rash on 3 year old????

Both my sons have had all of those childhood rashes (roseola, hand foot and mouth, fifths disease). Unless there is a high fever involved I think you are safe to wait until morning to go to the doctor. I would definitely call though first thing in the morning.

Re: Rash on 3 year old????

The rash went away by the time she woke up yesterday morning. Then last night it came back in different places and she had diarhea but no fever. She seems to be well. She had a small patch this morning on her chest. But it looks like it's going away. I wonder if I should even worry, but if it comes back I will be.

Re: Rash on 3 year old????

Now I am starting to worry..She has the "slapped cheek" look on her face. The rash really hasn't come back. There has been some small patches that come and go. I just read that some children don't even get symptoms. I know she's ok. She has been acting fine, very energetic. I am worried though that it could have affected my fetus. I haven't felt good my entire pg so I don't really know if I have any symptoms. Should I call the pediatrician and OBGYN on a Saturday?
