Help with Crying Baby - Children's Health Message Board

Hi everyone. My sister has a one month old girl. The baby has been a "crier" since day one, but things have been worse lately. Yesterday, the baby screamed for hours straight, no matter if they walked her, rubbed her back, fed her... etc. The only thing that worked for even a short time was to run the vacuum while she laid in her bouncy seat. After hours of the screaming, my sister called the pediatrician who told her to take the baby to the ER, just in case. They did that, and everything checked out fine. But today is no better. I just got off the phone with my sister, and my sister's exhausted and in tears. I don't know what to tell her, because my son hardly ever cried. Anyone else deal with this? Thanks.

Has the pediatrician thought about the possiblity that the baby is not doing well with her milk? Is she breast fed? Does she have gas a lot? Regular BM's? Is she drinking 2-4 ounces at a feeding on average? I had a nephew who also cried alot, ended up going through 3 different kinds of formula before we found one that agreed with his system. I would think that if the baby is making regular BM's and wetting several diapers a day, then maybe her formula needs to be changed. Unless of course she's being breast fed then your sister might want to make sure she isn't eating something that would upset her tummy. Hope this helps! Good Luck! Sherri.

Thanks for your reply. The baby is currently on breast milk. Sure sounds like an upset stomach, though, doesn't it? I'll mention it to my sister.

it's rare, but some babies are alergic to their mothers milk, maybe the baby is lactose intolerent. She should book an appointment with the baby's doctor asap to explore all reasons why the baby is crying so much.

This child could have colic? My 2nd ended being diagnosed with severe reflux. At 10 days we were in the ER - the baby was not sleeping more than 15 min at a time - the Dr said Colic. The Dr would not listen because she was gaining weight and seemed healthy By 3 months she was spitting up so bad that we had an upper GI done that showed the reflux and ruled out any other mechanical problems. I would not quit breast feeding if she is - it is the best. Have her try to eliminate all dairy and spicy items from her diet eat bland and see what happens then add one item at a time and see if it is an allergy. I wish you all the best.
