Exclamation Chronic allergies and prolonged colds

My child is 5 years old, and ever since we have moved to this new state, she has had persistant allergies and prolonged colds. I have tried echineacea, vitamin c, multi-vits, daily allergy meds (zyrtec and fluonase, when necessary). I just don't know what else to do for her. I am wondering if there are any other herbal supplements I could give her which would increase her immune system response, and if so, in what form and how much??? I hate giving her all these OTC meds, but I find that if I don't, she is just miserable and cannot breathe. When she is sick, she sounds like she is talking through her nose, which I am also wondering if this is caused by any one thing, such as enlarged adoids?? Any help would be greatly appreciated by this mom of twins

Rose? My 2yr old grandson has allergies and/or colds CONSTANTLY. My daughter has him on antibiotics most of the time which work for a week or so. I just bought him an air
filter using a Hepa filter and 3 replacement filters for his room. She is now considering ear tubes. His tonsils are swollen also. Each morning she gives him one dose of prescription medication; that's it for decongestants. I told her: if I had a toddler with these problems I would put all his stuffed animals in a see-through zip bag and rip out his carpeting. Also, the most common allergen is milk and I'd take him off of cow's milk. See, we are treating the symptoms but we have to remove the CAUSE. Of course, your baby has no bedding made with feathers or down, I hope. Binkie

My child seems to be doing much better, but I do not know if it is because she has not been exposed to anything lately, or if her immune system is working better. Currently, I have both my girls on a multivitamin, "Immunoraptor" supplements with Vit C, Zinc, etc.., and "Yummy Greens", which is a green food supplement containing spiralulina, alfalfa, etc.... When she was sick last, I really pushed liquid Echinecea, as well. We do know, though, that the last illness was not a cold, like it usually is, but a relative of "foot & mouth disease (Coxsackie virus). Don't think all the meds in the world could have helped us with that one.

We will see how they all work with her in the future, I am sure.

My child, which is five, has been on milk since about one, with no symptoms until we came to Arkansas last August. I have tried everything including sealing her mattresses and pillows with liners, air filters, vaporizers/humidifiers, OTC meds, and Zyrtec. Right now, barring any new circumstance or change in health, she has been sick free going on three weeks. When she was sick recently(with a relative of foot and mouth disease she caught from school, I might add), I pushed the liquid echinecea, as well as the multivitamins, Immunoraptor supplements, and Yummy Green supplements. If your grandson is a bad eater like my one daughter, I highly recommend the Yummy Greens, which supplements green foods. The Immunoraptors also supplement Zinc, Vitamin C, and other minerals. It is all worth a shot to keep her from getting sick all the time from being in preschool. I cannot say, other than the Zyrtec and Fluonase, that any of the other approaches have worked. I cannot keep her in a bubble, and considering I have allergies here as well, she must be allergic to something in the air - which leaves me even less empowered and vunerable.

Maybe your grandson should try something else, as well? My daughter had ear infections as an infant, as well. She never had tubes, but with all the people I have talked to about tubes, they usually help less the severity and duration of colds, as well as the child from having as many ear infections in the future. But unless the child has hearing loss, which your ear, nose, and throat doctor should test before putting in tubes, I do not recommend invasive surgery. Tonsils can be a big problem, as well, but I have read that tonsils in children tend to be large anyway, and that when a child gets sick, the tonsils enlarge to help fight the sickness. This concept is opposite what people usually think about tonsils - if they do not interfere with eat or drinking - it might not be that big of a problem. There is a high risk of profuse bleeding with tonsillectomies.
