Frequent UTIs - Any advice? - Children's Health Message Board

My 4 year old daughter has had over 6 UTIs in the last year. The first was a kidney infection, she was hospitalized, and then had 10 days of outpatient IV therapy. Then we took her to a Ped. Urologist and discovered that she had vesicouretural reflux. She had surgery to correct the reflux, and did well for a couple of months after surgery. She has now been getting UTIs, so we went back to the urologist, and found out that the surgery worked, but her bladder spasms, so she is on a bladder relaxant and we are watching her diet. She can't have chocolate, caffeine, carbonation, artificial coloring, or citrus. We also have to have her go to the bathroom every two hours. Does anyone out there have any suggestions? Anyone else done this?

My daughter had the renal reflux also. Has the Uro, put her on some type of preventive med yet? My daughter was on low dose macrodantin. It really did the trick. It is for the urinary tract itself. Worth asking about. If you have any other questions feel free to email me. Hope this helps some

Macrodantin is often used for UTI propylatics so asking your urologist about it would be great. Also have her drink plenty of cranberry juice but be sure to read the labels so that it doesn't contain anything she can't have. Cranberry juice capsules are also available but I am not sure she would take them even if opened and put in sauce. Vitamin C is also used as a preventative but you would have to ask your doc how much to give as I am not familiar with pediatric doses. When she does have a UTI ask the doc about post med testing where they do another urinalysis 2-3 days after she finishes the antibiotic to be sure it took care of the bug that was causing her UTI. As mentioned in the other post she should not use any bath products like bubble bath and no soaps in that area. Be sure she drinks plenty of water as this will dilute her urine and help flush out any bacteria before it has a chance to multiply.

Thank you to all of you!! I really appreciate the advice. She is on Macrodantin and we don't allow any tub baths, etc. I also wipe for her. I have wondered about the Vitamin C, but it is one of the things she can't have, either, as it is a bladder irritant. These diet restrictions are really tricky - especially getting her to understand that it is for her own good. Andrea

When the doctor said no citrus did he specifically say no vitamin c tablets? If he didn't specifically say not vitamin c tabs why not check with his office and find out. It would be worth a shot.
