It's up to you..my daughter was 2 1/2 before i let her go to sleep completly on her own, my son was about 3. It depends on you and your child. At 5months there is absolutly nothing wrong with helping your baby fall asleep. If he is comfortable going to sleep on his own, and your comfortable letting him then there is nothing wrong with that. If you want him to fall asleep on his own some tips i've heard are...gradually reduce the time your rocking him untill it'sjust a hug and kiss, once he's in bed leave him in bed, if he wakes up go in and rub his back and talk to him but don't pick him up, try to avoid getting fustrated, it'll only make him more upset. But at 5 months it may take a while, he's not old enough to understand so chances are it's going to take a week or two atleast to get him falling asleep on their own, and you should do it with the least amount of stress to him as possible..you want to keep bedtime a happy time, not a stressful time. but like i said unless you have a problem with it there is nothing wrong with you rocking him to sleep, bedtime can be great bonding time.
