5y/o with prolonged unexplained fever - Children's Health Message Board

My 5 y/o son has had a fever for 29 days. He is also having night sweats every night(even when he is not running a temp). We have seen an Infectious Disease doctor who is still waiting on some labs(including a test for Lupus). They have ruled out mono, TB, hepatitis, Lyme Disease, etc. His head and chest Xrays are fine. His temp is now running around 100 every day, but it was up to 105 for the first few days. I have done enough research on the internet to know that his symptoms can be associated with some very serious things. Has anyone had any similar experiences? Any suggestions?

Get as much detailed blood work done as possible - fevers that get this high are serious. I'm assuming that one of the first tests done was a CBC Diff.

Suggest you check the Periodic Fever Syndrome [aka PFA]. There are quite a few parents on this board that might be able to help you narrow down the possibilities.

My daughter ran a fever for 3 months straight. Right now she has been fevering for 14 days. She has tested for a positive ANA, positive anti-dsDNA, positive SS-B (Sjorgren's), and a positive anti-smith. This is highly suggestive for lupus. You mentioned that your doctor ran a lupus panel. How did it turn out?
Does he have any of the other lupus related symptoms?
fatigue?
photosensitivity?
nose/mouth sores?
achy joints?
butterfly rash?
protein in urine?

Let me know how his lab tests come out.

I am still waiting on the dr to call back with the lupus results. He is still running fever every day, and he has said 3-4 times that his legs were "shaky", but no joint pain. Yes, he is tired but he is not sleeping well because his night sweats have gotten worse. He did have a rash about 6 wks ago that my Pediatrician said was Scarlet Fever, but our Infectious Disease Dr doesn't seem to think that he had strep(which would have caused the scarlet fever).
Thanks for the reply, no one has asked about mouth sores, and he has had one this week. I will make sure that I mention that to his dr.
How is your daughter doing now? How old is she? Did it take a long time for your dr to figure out what was going on with her?

my son is now 18 months old and has run a fever everyday since he was born, he always had a fever anywhere from about 100 to 103 with no explanation, then june 18 of this year at 15 months old his temperature hit 105 he passed out and took a massive seizure he was in a coma for 5 days and know suffers from severe brain damage, what ever u do do not take no for an answer, we still do not know what happened to him or what it was that he had or has, but he has not had a fever since, maybe we could chat, tell me if u find out anything maybe it would help me out to.did they check him for menigitis?
