Time to start potty training? - Children's Health Message Board

Hi all!

My son is 16 months old and has just recently started to put his hand down the front of his diapers (or nappies if you're in England!). I don't know if he's trying to tell me he needs changing or if he's trying to tell me he's ready to start potty training. He can't speak yet, just babbles, but has given no other indication as yet that he's ready to give up the diaper, but I was just wondering.

Any insight is most helpful! Thanks!

at his age i think he's too young to seriously start trying. But if you like you can get him a potty and some big boy underwear and see where it goes from there. I wouldn't force him or make an issue out of it though.

At that age he is just curious about his "parts". My daughters did that too, but in public! Just speaking from my experience, they are interested when they start to copy you when you go to the bathroom. My girls didn't start until they were 2-2 1/2.

Amy... oh my God... he's 16 months old already??? WOW!! I remember giving you advice when you were posting on the pregnancy boards!!! I remember when you were ready to pop and were complaining cause it seemed that he didn't want to leave your body!!!! hehehe!!!

At 16 months old, there usually not ready to potty train, just curoius about there parts. Although, you could buy the potty and let him use it as a seat, or even use the bottom part as a step stool when brushing his teeth. Even at that age, those parts feel good, and from experience (my son rocks his hips back and forth on the floor) I know that little boys will play where it feels good to play! hehehe!

I remember you posting a link to a picture of him when he was newborn... do you have any updates to show us???

I hope you remember me, we posted quite a bit when you were pregnant. I have an almost 12 year old daughter, a 5 year old son, and a 3 year old daughter.

I also usually just browse through the boards and only comment once in a while. But, seeing your name, thinking WOW! she's still here and her son is now 16 mths!!!! WOW. How time flies.

Personally I think parents wait too long to start potty training. Hence the word "training". I have 3 girls 17,14 and 8, all 3 of them were completely trained by the time they turned 2.
I think it has alot to do with the parents taking the time, because it does take time.
