grandaughter with funny habit - Children's Health Message Board

Hello, I have a 5 year old grandaughter who when she is tired or bored or just being quiet will suck on her tongue. She just kinda has her mouth open and sucks on her tongue. If we speak to her she stops. She does not do this every day but it bothers her mommy and daddy. She is very bright and already can read some books. Anyone else see this in their kids? I think they should distract her when they see her doing it without saying anything about the habit. Cause I do not think she is aware of what she is doing. I think it is a stress reliever. thank you all for writing back. Have a happy day.

hi most kids have some form of 'comforter' maybe this is hers im sure shes fine. my daughter had a 'comforter' which was a bra

she used to rub the strap and suck her dummy

she didnt care who was there lol it was scruffy she wouldnt let me wash it lol it caused me loads of embarrasing moments especially when it was left lying around lol...and obviously you could tell it belonged to me at one time

Hey,

I babysit alot, and i've looked after a kid that used to sort of suck on his tongue. I think it's really normal. Better that than sucking on a thumb and getting possibly buck teeth when your older!

My son seems to have a new habit every year. First he would go around blowing on his fingers. Then it was a grunting noise. Then squinting his eyes. After a few months he got over one habit and moved on to the next. So far he hasnt had a habit lately.
