Question 6wk old with feeding problems. Help!!!

I have a 6 week old baby boy that has me going crazy. He is Bottle fed and had been eating 4 1/2oz about every 3 hours. For the past two weeks he will only eat about 2oz. He also started spitting up with every feeding. I have had him to the doctor but he is still gaining weight so they are not worried. He gets very very fussy and fights me if I try to give him more formula. I know something is wrong but the doctors don't see what I do. I am a new mom at the end of my rope. If anyone has any advice for me or has had the same experience please let me know. I need to know what I can do to get him to eat again.

what formula are you using? you may want to try switching to another kind, his current formula may be too hard for him to digest.

My son had reflux as an infant. It can cause vomiting or spitting up after being fed, and a decreased desire to eat due to not feeling well when feeding. Most babies outgrow the reflux by about 10 months or so. There is medication that can help, if that's what the problem is. Might be worth asking your doctor about.

I pray that nothing is seriously wrong and there probably isn't. However, having said that, you know your child. You may be a first time mom but you know your child best. I say this because I had problems with my kids when they were babies.

My son used to do what you described. The dr's wanted me to feed him pure butter to try to "fatten" him up since he was spitting up all his milk. Turns out he was SEVERELY allergic to milk. We switched to soy and he was fine.

My youngest daughter also had the same problem of spitting up and not eating much. Turned out she had a malrotation of her bowels and ended up having surgery. (I doubt anything like this is wrong - very rare)

The point is that you have to fight for your child cause no one else will. Ask your dr. for a referral to a pediatrician. Or, most hospitals have a feeding clinic, ask them. Tell your dr. you are upset about it and want some reassurance. Don't let the dr. intimidate you. They don't know everything despite what some of them want you to think. lol

Hopefully it's just an upset stomach and it will work itself out quickly! Good luck and keep us posted.

I'm not a health care professional but it sounds like he's just trying to get adjusted and if he's gaining weight well the doctor is right...baby's eat when they are hungry but back to the point...my son did the same thing it was the formula giving him gas...there are all kinds of home remedies to try...try a warm water bottle with him laying on his belly on it or even a heating pad on low towel between him and the heating pad but make sure he's on his belly....doctors dont suggest it but you can also buy Milicon drops to put in his formula..its like a Mylanta for babies...that might help...I feel for you...in one week with my son I think I had the carpet and funiture professionally cleaned as a result of his vomiting.....but hang in there....keep in mind what the last posting said you are the mom and you know best dont quit asking until you are satisfied with the answer....take care and God Bless
