My 10yr has a shunt and it is due to Hydroceplus to.Hydorceplus is when the brain fluid stops flowing on its own and starts build up pressure on the brain which if a shunt is not put in then the person will go into A coma and die. She has had it since she was 6 and she has played fine and even joined in activities just like any other child. The most common people to receive shunts is newborns because most of the time it is a birth defect. My in her case they never found the cause for her illness but I am just thankful that they were able to fix my little girl. She will have the shunt for the rest of her life.The only other reason for a person to have a shunt because they have a tumor or a cyst blocking the ventricles in the brain. My daughter had none of the quote normal causes but she is fine now. She is very happy and healthy and acting just like any other 10 yr going into the sixth grade. I hope this helps
