Red face My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

My 2 year old is a great boy... he is just very different... He doesn't walk or talk yet.. He has been having all these different tests done, and therapies, and still I don't see much improvement... I am kind of getting discouraged.. It is so hard to even take a minute of my life for myself... My husband doesn't think that I should treat him different than my 1 year old, but he is different.. So I end up being the one to do everything for him... The doctors keep saying we may never know what is wrong... and I am just looking for anyone out there that may have an enocouraging words... I am a lost lonely mom of a special boy out here, and don't know what to do, and have nobody to talk to... I know someone is out there somewhere...

I am stuck here on a little island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and I can't get back home. The doctor's here don't even seem as if they know what they are doing, they are all foreign to me anyway... I just need a fellow friend out there that may be able to enlighten my spirits some...

Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

Does your son try to pronounce things correctly or does he seem to have his own language for things. Your son may just be developing at a very slow pace and may catch up with the other childer pending a genetic disorder. Does your son still crawl? Does he attempt to walk on his own? Does he have any abnormal physical characteristics? Let us know more so we may try and understand your situation.

Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

We have had a lot of different testing done, including the genetic workup and the fragile x. The only test that seems to come back with any problems is his ammonia level is elevate. He had a metabolic profile done, and it was in-conclusive because all of the levels were way too high... Or at least this is what the doctor says, like I said before the doctors here don't seem that intelligent.. I even wondered if it could be a milk allergy because he was learning things at the normal age, but then once the Dr stopped him from drinking Nutramigen and he drink regular milk is when he started to regress. He used to fall all the time when crawling, he was really shakey... But now he crawls ok, pulls up on furniture, but can't not stand, not even well with help... As far as his speech he doesn't mock anything, he has his own sounds and actions that show me what's wrong with him, I guess I just have the intuition on what he wants. I have tried to teach him some simple signs and even tried to get him to mock me, but nothing that sounds like words comes out, only screams and cries. My 1 year old is passing him quickly, and I really see the delay in my older son, and it is hard to deal with emotionally and physically, and even though I am married I feel alone in this... I thank you for any time and any advice...

Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

Is it possible that he maybe autistic? Does he laugh? Chuckle? Giggle? anything like that? Does he have a difficult time showing emotions? I'm far from being a proffessional, but it doesn't seem right that this could be caused by a change in diet. I hope you find out soon what is going on. There is nothing worse than having something wrong with a child and not being able to help them.

Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

Do you think he could have a mild case of C.P? ( removed-) YOu can post all his signs and symptoms and I can call our pediatrician here in Florida and see what he comes up with. It does sound like autism or Cerebral Pasey ( spelling ) I'll do my best to search the web. Can he do anything? Draw, sing? Eat by himself? Drink out of a cup? Socialize in any way? Can he see? Does he hear? Tell all about him so we can help you. I will do everything I can for you. At least you have this communication open. It sounds like normal symptoms of a few things I've heard of. Post more info if you can.

Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

He laughs and giggle, but he does cry most of the time... Here on Guam they evaluate them for autism before they actually test them, and they said he didn't need testing..
I thought that could be what it was also... He doesn't really socialize, his hearing and sight tested fine... He can feed his self with his hands, but his motor skills are that of less than a 1 year old, he is somewhat uncooridinated, and sometimes it is hard to get his attention... I just finally got a computer and I am doing all of the searching I can.. I really appreciate this input... It helps to at least talk with someone about it... I want so bad to go home to the states where I have my family support system, and better medical professionals... just right now it is not financially possible... I will post more later when he sleeps... He requires a lot of my attention right now.. thx for the replies and the help... You will never know how much I appreciate this...

Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

Hi GuamMom!

I saw that you posted on my thread and I can't even begin to tell you how much your son sounds like mine.

We also had all kids of tests done on our son and everything came back negative so I'm come to a conclusion that he's just delayed. It has been a very trying time in our lives especially mine. I hate to say this but it got to where I wouldn't take him out because I was embarrassed of him, I feel so bad to even say that about him. Our son is testing at a 1-year level and he'll be 3 in April, so I totally understand your frustration and concern. My son just barely started walking alone but not talking at all. Do you have any kind of intervention programs there where you're at? we have our son in rolled in ECI(Early Childhood Intervention) they come to our home and do therapy with him, it's help some but I guess their purpose is to also teach us how to help him.

Please keep in touch and let me know how your son is doing. We can definitely relate.

Lots of love and compassion

Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

I am so glad to hear a reply from you....It is great to have a way to communticate with others in similar situations....Life has just been so frustrating....Just the other day we got a diagnosis for my son, and they now say he has a mixed form of cerebral palsy...I don't know if your doctor has explored that...but I checked out info online about it, and so much of it matches to my son...He is testing at about a 12 month level and he is well past 2... We do have an early intervention program that comes here, but they say that he needs to see an orthopedic doctor... Well there isn't one here on the island where I live, so now my family is fund raising to move us to the states to get better care for him...the best care... I hope that we can keep in touch...It is great to have some one to talk to...I have been beating myself up for the past couple days....just wondering if I did something wrong, and angry because it seems like he will never be normal.. Thank you for taking the time to share with me...I hope that we can continue to keep in touch...

Actually just a few days ago the doctor diagnosed my son with a mixed form of CP, I am not sure if I believe them...but after reading up on CP on the net, a lot of things are coming together...now I am not sure what to do from here...I know that he needs to see an orthopedic doctor, but there are none on this island...I need to bring my boy back to the states and get him better care...I thank all of you for your time and intrest in my situation...Now I am just sitting here beating myself up, wondering why this is, and what I did wrong...

Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

Hi again!

Actually when we took our son to the Ear Specialist to make sure that his earing was fine, the doctor told us that he thought that our son may have a touch of CP. Well after I left there from that appointment I called his Neurologist and asked him if in the CT Scan that was done on my son about 5 months earlier, if that would have shown CP and he told me that yes, it would have shown up but that all the test's that have been done (blood and urine) it would have shown up somewhere. So I was very happy to hear that, it gave me some peace of mind about that.

Well I'm sorry that you don't have a specialist there where you're at that can help your son. I pray that you can come to the states soon and get him the medical attention that he needs.

Don't get discouraged or mad. No one knows why these kinds of things happen to children and believe me if anyone knows how frustrating and difficult it is... I do! Sometimes I would get so frustrated I would get mad at him, then after I would be so sorry and crying because it's not his fault. Then I would get mad at myself or at my husband because I just wanted to blame someone for my son being like this. But I know it's not anyones fault it just happened to happen to us and my son will just need more work than other children.

Keep in touch and let me know what's going on.

Hugs!!!

My neice was the same way when she was two-only she walked. She wouldn't talk and my sister had all these tests done and nothing until she finally took her to a specialist who discovered that she is partially deaf in both ears and that was why she never talked.

Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

Great to hear from you again...The neurologist said that it wouldn't necessarily show up in th MRI until he gets a little older...Especially if it is the middle brain that is affected....I don't know, that is why I am trying to get back stateside so I can go to a physician I have trust in...Make sure that it isn't something else...The neurologist was telling me that there are different ways to diagnose the CP, it has a lot to do with reflexes, things that happened at birth.....etc... Anyway...I just want you to know that it really means a lot to me to have someone to talk with...Ever since this diagnosis I have pretty much been a bomb waiting to explode, crying, getting mad, and my family is too far away to be comforted by them but so much...and it really helps to have you here, someone who understands my situation better than most...I hope we keep in touch...thanks again for your time..

Talking Re: My son is 2 and he doesn't walk or talk yet...

Just wanted to let you know that he is doing o.k. Pretty much the same... but we did finally get a diagnosis.... He has been diagnosed with a form of Cerebral Palsy... So now our main goal is to get off of this island... There is not even an Orthopedic doctor on this island... I have family in the states willing to help out... We are just trying to raise the money for the trip... Wrote many letters to my old churches in the states.... told a lot of friends... wrote Dr. Phil... and even Oprah... But just keep us in your prayers.. and thank you so much for being here for me... You are appreciated more than you could ever know...

Hi GuamMom,How are your Sons ammonia levels doing.Did his doctor follow up on this and did the doctor tell you why they were high like from a viral illness etc.Im really troubled by your post about your Son being switched to milk and going down hill.If he has some sort of urea cycle disorder, or some disorder where his body cant clear ammonia he needs treatment with medication, special diet low in protein, no milk ,no meat ,special drink like PFD-1 or PED-2 Mead Johnson.Take Care
