My son was in ECI and we have taken him to all sorts of specialists and no one has any answers so I know there just might not be an answer at this point but I'm just wondering if there is anyone out there that has experienced this same situation.

My son didn't start to talk until after two and even now at six he gets speech therapy three times a week. His speech is very broken and sometimes we have a hard time making out what he is saying. He is develpmentally delayed and attends a special ed class. He is also ADHD. Is you child not talking at all or just not sentences? For the longest time the doctors thought he may be autistic but now it seems he may just have autistic tendancies. It's so hard for doctors to pinpoint one thing that they usually label them "multiple disabilities" so not to "tag" them. My son also attended ECI classes for 2 years. He has kids in his class now that talk very little.

Has your son had his hearing evaluated? Have you had your son evaluated by a developmental pediatrician? If you haven't then this is where I would start asap.

You don't mention any other concerns but the speech delay in itself is reason to have him evaluated. My son has PDD/NOS which is a form of Autism. He has received alot of therapy and is extremely high functioning and almost indistinguishable from his peers. He is three.

I would talk to your doctor because if by chance it's more than just a speech delay, the more help your son receives now the better his prognonsis will be.

Hi ladies,

Thank you so much for your comments. Yes we have had his hearing checked, had him see a neurologist, developmental pediatrician, and many more specialists, he was also in ECI from 18 months until now that he's 3. This coming August he's going into a special school for kids with delays or mental problems. I've had all the tests done on him but NOT ONE of the billion doctors could tell me what was wrong with him.

No he's not talking at all, NOTHING, he just grunts or points. He's very active and the doctors ruled out any kind of Autistic behavior. All they have ever been able to tell me is that he's delayed, that's it! It has been very frustraiting but I've learned to live with it.

Please do a search on "Apraxia" and see if you think it applies to your child. My son is autistic, but his teacher has a son with apraxia and I have learned some about it through her. Her son understands and is very bright, but he has extreme dificulties with speech. Dispraxia means they have some speech, Apraxia means no speech at all. Let me know what you think after you read up on this, it is the only thing I can think of since autism has been ruled out. Hang in there hun.
