Leg pains but possibly not growing pains? - Children's Health Message Board

Hello. I have a question for you. My son is almost eight years old. Since he has been three he has been plagued with terrible calf, ankle, foot and sometimes wrist pain at night. It seems to be around his tendons and he is left in tears every time. If we don't give him motrin (and I usually try not to give it), he'll wake up every two hours or so with the pain. We massage his legs and after about 45 minutes the pain goes away. When he was three we were told by the pediatrician it was probably growing pains. I'm just not sure. It seems to happen more during the rainy season or during the summer when there has been a rain. He's had times when his legs hurt during the day too and he can feel the pains coming on.

He was checked for psoriatic arthritis about two years ago because he does have psoriasis but the doctor didn't think that was it.

Does anybody have any clue what this is? I just don't know that this is really growing pains and it does worry me.

I'm not sure I can be of too much help, but I did want to let you know my nephew has had night time leg pains for as long as I can remember. My sister does the same thing for him that you do for your son. He is 12 now and still has them. My sister and her husband are very tall people. Right now my nephew is 5' 8" (and just turned 12 in April). The Dr. just said he was growing so fast, and what he is feeling is growing pains.

I hated that your message didn't get a reply yet so although I can't share a lot of info with you, I wanted you to know that there is another kid out there just like him!

I am going through this exact smae thing only my son is 3 years old. He screams in pain and we have to massage his poor little legs. However it doesnt only happen at night. It happens during the day too and its so painful to him he cant walk. I dont remember ever having such bad growing pains I couldnt walk but the Dr seems to think thats exactly whats going on. I also dont have any advice for you but I am going through the same thing. Have you had him checked for juvenile arthritis?
