Question 9 1/2 year old with bedwetting problem

My son has had a bedwetting problem all his life. Every night he is soaking wet! There are maybe 3 days out of the month when he is dry. I was told by his pedi a couple of years ago that this would clear up on its own and not to pressure him about it.

We've tried limiting his fluids before bed, waking him in the middle of the night, etc. It looks like he goes more than once in a night. I'll check him every couple of hours, get him up if he's wet but he'll still be wet in the morning. I'm exhausted! I'm washing all his bedding every day. He is wearing pull ups, but have tried for a while to go without them to see if maybe being wet was more uncomforable and would wake himself up or something.

Another thing of note is that he only has one kidney which is enlarged. My guess is that his kidney just drains slower which causes him to have a full bladder several hours after drinking, but that wouldn't cause him to have incontinence at night?

Any ideas?

Kristin

Re: 9 1/2 year old with bedwetting problem

i would definately talk to your dr. again, it seems that something is going on, if nothing helps.
is he on any kind of medicine? my husband's cousin had this problem up into his teen years, and he had to take a medicine for it, and it only occured at night also.
i don't know, but it seems it would be important for a dr. to try to find out what was the cause. It sounds like with his medical history, that that may be some of the reasons.
wish you the best,
brandi

Re: 9 1/2 year old with bedwetting problem

Hi Kristen,I wanted to comment on this since this is something I know all to well.I wet my bed almost every night of my life untill I was ten and a half.It wasnt fun for me or my parents either. They took me to so many doctors tried all there advice and yet nothing ever worked. They too woke me up every so many hours but yet I woke up soaked and cold. Then shortly after my tenth birthday it got less and less and then just stopped Im now 30 and havent had an accident since.Years later my father confessed to my mother he too wet the bed untill he was fifteen to emabarrased to tell anyone. My mom quickly came to me to let me know it was something that he dealt with too and maybe it was genetic. Then years later I got married and had my daughter she too wet the bed each night never a night she didnt wake up soaked.I bought pull ups and never made her feel bad never pressured her never even told anyone else to not embarrass her I made sure she knew it was something that others go through and it will stop. Its not a fun thing and can be very embarrasing to go through I should know but constanly talking about it and trying to cure the problem and always just focusing on it can be so much more damaging. My mom pressured me and was not so nice to me when I would wake up wet each day I was called lazy and everything else, if only my dad had spoke up sooner I wouldnt of had to gone through all those years at specialists with there new cures to try.About seven months after my daughter turned 8 it got less and less and then stopped shes now 11 and a half and has never had an accident since. My son came along almost 6 years after my daughter we all held our breath with him hoping he would not have to go through this too and us either I mean buying those pull ups are not cheap and its not fun to see your child want so badly to go to a slumber party with friends but to scared someone will know they are wearing a pull up and when I was young they didnt have them so I had to deal with a wet bed each moring. But luckily my son never wet the bed hes almost 5 now and he was the lucky one I guess taking after his daddys side of the family. So basically what Im saying is this is a real problem not fun by far but does happen and does go away could be tomororw could be years from now...I agree totally with the docs not to pressure your child don't even bring it up at all its not in there hands and one day it will stop unless however there is something more going on...but if the docs say hes fine and if hes wet the bed all his life most docs will say do not worry just give his bladder time to mature and play catch up with the rest of him...However if you feel in your heart that something else is going on than do not give in take him untill you get more answers but if hes wet the bed always It sounds like sooner or later he will be ok and get to go to sleep knowing he will wake up dry!
