Exclamation Almost 4 years old and still not talking!

My son is almost 4 years old and he can only say 4 words (mama, truck, sock, car).

He wasn't premature nor did he have any complications at all.

We've taken him to EVERY specialist under the sun and every test that comes back comes back that there is nothing wrong with him. Which of course is a good thing, yes I know, but gosh! I get so frustraited! Can you imagine having a son that should be able to hold a conversation and not even being able to talk to him??? I just don't know what to do anymore! We have him in school for children with delays and there he gets speech therapy but still haven't seen a vast improvement. I feel like I'm up against a brick wall because we've done EVERYTHING to find out what's wrong if anything.

And I'm so freakin' sick and tired of people asking me "what's wrong with him?" "why doesn't he talk yet?" I swear, I wish people could just understand that those are not the kind of questions I want to be asked nor do I want to answer.

So please, anyone, if you have ever heard of this, I could seriously use all the advise I can get.

Thanks in advance

Sarah

Re: Almost 4 years old and still not talking!

Is your son using any other methods to assist with his communication?
I am an Educational Assistant (when not on maternity leave) who spent the first part of my career working with children with hearing impairments. My main student was integrated 100% and although he had some speach he needed to be with peers who spoke to learn to communicate effectively. At the same time these peers needed to learn to sign to communicate effectively with him. To help this process, I spent part of every day teaching the entire class how to use sign language. Within this class we had a few children with limited language...some were delayed, some were shy and some had immigrated to Canada from other countries. ALL of the kids in the class benefited from learning sign and those that were struggling seem to move into spoken language quicker than the kids in the other kindergarten class who didn't learn sign.
Perhaps this is something that would help your son. I am also a very strong believer in integration and really believe that children learn best from being in an environment where the desired behaviour is modelled by their peers. However, I also realize that not all school districts have/support this believe and do not provide the support of someone like myself to aid with this process.
Anyway, perhaps some alternative methods of communication will help your son discover his voice. There are some great computer systems out there that can help as well as some great picture systems.
I had a cousin who never said a word till he was 4. On his 4th birthday he started talking an never stopped. He was hard to understand and had some problems with both his hearing (due to tubes) and his listening abilities (due to a central auditory processing problem) but by 6-8 years old you couldn't tell he'd ever had this delay. Hopefully, in time, your little guy will work it out too.

Hey, I agree with Jordyn - I don't have kids, but I work with children who have special needs - giving your son picture signs (Boardmaker has great ones, there are other resources out there as well) will at least help you two to communicate more, and can give you a starting point in helping with his speech. Just a thought - best of luck

Re: Almost 4 years old and still not talking!

my friends children came round yesterday, she has twins who are nearly 4, one of them wont stop talking and the other wont say a word! he ran up to me to say something nearly spoke then changed his mind, he looked frustrated then he ran away again! i think he doesnt have a wide enough vocabulary to say what he wants to and his brain works faster than his mouth can!just carry on having conversations with him even though he doesnt speak back, im sure he probably knows what you are saying and will suddenly start talking and you wont be able to shut him up!good luck x
