When should a boy start to stand when urinating?

Hi All,

My DS is 4.5 years old and still sits to urinate. My DH and I try to encourage him to stand but DS doesn't want to.

When do most boys stand when urinating?

This is not a huge issue, but I was curious.

Thanks.

Why does it matter? Quite a few guys prefer to sit. Your son will learn to stand up when he's ready, if he ever wants to.

I saw a woman in a public restroom not a few days ago who had her little boy with her. She started yelling "You're not a girl! Stand up and do it right!" at him. Truthfully, I just felt embarassed for the poor kid. That's like saying you have to wear flipflops on the boardwalk at the beach or something.

My DS always sat on the toilet seat, but when his dad took him into a urinal, he stood up there like a real little man (LOL) according to his dad. I wasn't too overjoyed when he did stand up (about kindergarten age) at home because the toilet floor was never the same again. Cheers Sera

Re: When should a boy start to stand when urinating?

My oldest was slow to get off the pot. I think it was partly due to the years of hanging out with mom in the bathroom. When his little brother was tall enough, the boys would run to the toilet together and both stand - I miss those days -they were funny.

I think it is gross but some magazine said "throw a couple cereal circles in the bowl as a target"... I'd rather keep food out of there and leave the door open when my male is in there-let the boys copy men.

My son starting standing up as soon as he got the hang of using the potty. He couldn't wait!

Re: When should a boy start to stand when urinating?

My son started at about age two to stand and use it. He wanted to be a big boy like daddy. He walked in and tried to use the potty when daddy was doing it a couple of times. My DH wasn't pleased with using the potty at the same time, but they compromised and would take turns with who would go first. I think boys will do what they see. SO have your son go to the potty with his dad on occasion. My son really has done the old monkey see monkey do behavior mimicry.

Sincerely,
MG

Thanks for the input. DS does watch DH on occasion, and he will stand sometimes but it's not his preferred method.

I wasn't sure if most boys stood at this age or not.

It is much cleaner when they sit, my son sits and Husband......I always hate when men come over and use the toillet, there is always sprinkles on the seat....gross

I would let him go the way he wants, especally if it is the cleaner way.

Althought I would encourage them to stand in a public washroom, I don't even sit in a public washroom, I do the hover thing!

That's why they're supposed to lift the seat... yuck.

Re: When should a boy start to stand when urinating?

My son started standing shortly after he was potty trained (about age 2 1/2)- his Daddy helped by demonstrating.

My son started right after potty training also. By the way, if son OR husband leave seat up afterwards, I pitch a fit.
