5 yr olds noise anxiety

Has anyone experienced a child with hypersensitive noise anxiety? This child does not like loud noises. The cafateria at school is loud and it is becoming an issue. The child crys when getting in line to go to lunch. Today the teacher observed this and sat outside and ate lunch with 2 children. The teacher can not do this on a daily basis. The parents can not go to the school daily to eat outside. The first few days of school were okay. But now time is spent going to the nurse with a stomach ache. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Re: 5 yr olds noise anxiety

Hello There!

Assuming that this child has been checked out by a doctor to rule out any abnormalities...

The child should be evaluated by an occupational therapist. He/She could have a sensory disorder. My 11 yr old son has Sensory Intergration Dysfunction. For him, he is more sensative with touch. My son rides a minibus to school because he can't tolerate the large overcrowded bus. This is all part of an IEP (Individualized Education Plan)

I don't know what the educational system is like for children with special needs there in Florida, but in the Northeast, you can go to the school districts special education dept and request to have a child evaluated. This is time consuming and a lot of paper pushing to get it going though. I suggest you get speak with the Principal of the school and let them now the situation. I now if it were my child, I would ask if he/she could sit a private area in the office (out of the view of other children, cause I now the stigma this causes) atleast for the time being. Depending on the Principal, if they are a real child friendly person, you could ask if your child could be there with a friend if they have one.

Once he/she is evaluated, an IEP can be forned which will suit all of the needs of the child. Accomodations for lunch, transportation,... Anything that is a part of the whole picture. Whatever is on the IEP has to be honored.

It couldn't also hurt to go to a hearing specialist and/or neurologist to make sure there isn't any underlying issues.

Hope this helps!

Re: 5 yr olds noise anxiety

Hi, the previous poster had some good suggestions. But, here's another view. Does this 5 year old come from a quiet home? ie. no siblings? This also happened to our daughter, an only child, when she started kindergarten. The noise and activity was too much for her at the beginning, but within a few weeks she was used to it and all was well. 5 years old is really young to be eating in the cafeteria with the rest of the kids...the few times that I have ventured into our lunchroom, I was overwhelmed by the noise level. It wouldn've been terrible for a young child. Anyways, my thoughts.....

best, c
