how long do you have to keep a fever down for it to go away

how long do you have to keep a fever down for it to go away? I'm talking an adult's fever by the way.

As far as Im aware you have to treat a childs fever as long as they have it and if it continues to need treatment over 4 days they should be seen by a doctor. I was told to rotate fever medication it helps get it under control and seems to go away faster.
Hope that helps

Re: how long do you have to keep a fever down for it to go away

Keeping it down has nothing to do with when it will go away. It will go away once the infection has improved. There are some ideas out there that you shouldn't interfere with a fever, that it actually helps the body to combat the infection. The only reason fevers need to be kept under control is comfort and so that they don't get too high and therefore be dangerous. Also if the fever shoots up too fast you can have a seizure.

Ditto on what Sannah just posted.the fever is there for a reason as the body 'heats up' in order to battle the infection.by removing the fever, you are kind of defeating a natural thing that is supposed to occur, within limits of course.in an adult,i would really not "treat" the actual fever(unless there is other discomfort)unless it hits around 102.marcia
