Four Year Old Son with Strep for 3 months - Help!

Hello,

Was wondering if anyone could provide some insight as to why this strep infection is holding on to my four year old son. It started three months ago with high fevers, tounge welts, throat blisters, etc... After two weeks on antibiotics it cleared up but the strep was still there. Then fever and olther symptoms returned, strep was confirmed with culture and it was back on antibiotics and other meds for two weeks. After the two weeks we took him for a recheck, still cultured strep. Kept on antibiotics for another week back in to recheck, still cultured strep. They proceeded to take another culture to send to the lab to "grow" for a few days. Nervous about my baby, Anyone have experience with this and/or possible solution?

Re: Four Year Old Son with Strep for 3 months - Help!

just curious, has everyone in your family actually had a throat culture done and had strep ruled out in them? one possibility would be that a family memeber actually has this but has not actually shown signs of it yet. i have had strep many times over the years and the one time my son had it and just becasue i happened to be the one who took him to the ped that day, despite the fact i didn;t even have the slightest of a sore throat, they did a culture on me too and i actually had strep. very suprised since i actually felt just fine. but my rapid culture came up positive anyways. they then placed me and my son on anti Bs and told me to have other family tested too. no one else had it but me and my son. after the anti Bs,we were both fine. just one possibility that he is being re exposed and infected by someone else. there are also certain toys he could be playing with that have been somehow contaminated too. or something else in the house?

another problem is the more virulent strains we have now of strep and other viral infections becasue people don;t always finish their anti Bs so the infections, over time that are out there now become more resistant to anti Bs, because they have been somewhat 'desensitized by the addition of the anti Bs being part of the energizing ability to spread the strep or other infections that are normally treated with anti Bs. your son just may need a much stronger anti B. my youngest ended up having to go the IV anti B route when he had finished all his anti Bs on a fri but got sicker than heck over the weekend. he ended up in the ER and we found out the strep had never actually left him. so he got IV rocephtin(sp?) for a few days then onto orals when he went home, it finally kicked. i would most definitely talk with his ped about these different possibilities. there are just sooo many newer stronger strains of things out there now that can be very hard to really just treat and kick. your going to just have to stay on this til something actually works for him. hopefully one step up inthe anti B line will help him. hope he feels better soon. please keep me posted. Marcia

You can cure strep throat naturally without drugs and antibiotics. Nature produce natural antibiotics that don't kill the good bacteria whereas drug company produced antibiotics kill both good and bad bacteria and you need the good bacteria to stay healthy. You need to build your son's immune system back up naturally. You can do a quick search on the net to help guide you. Drugs are made of chemicals which the body does not process well and it brings the immune system down. There are natural cures, just do a search on it. Try adding fresh garlic to his meals. dsfb

Re: Four Year Old Son with Strep for 3 months - Help!

Many years ago, I had the same problem with my son. Went to a throat specialist. He discovered that my son was immune to the antibiotic he was on. He tried another, but no luck. He said the antibiotic was coating the strep, but that the germ was hiding behind the tonsils. He suggested taking the tonsils out. We did and no more step throats.

Yikes! Poor baby. I think you might nail it this time. The "grow" part is a "culture and sensitivity" They are going to test it and see what it may be resistant to. Your babe might just of been on the wrong antibiotic or not a strong enough dose. Like another poster said "toothbrush or cup" might be reinfecting him. If you have a dishwasher I would throw those in. You might want to even turn up the water temperature on your water heater to make sure the water is hot enough to kill this off on dishes and utensils.
Good luck to you
