5 year old w/ short stature, slow growth, sugar sensitivity, cloudy urine & headaches

Hi, 1st time poster here. I am just wondering if anyone has any idea what if anything could be wrong with my son? He was born 9lbs. 9ozs so he was big but he fell into 10th percentile shortly after birth and been there ever since. He is almost 5. He's very small for his age and only weighs 35 pounds but very, very smart. He suffers from major sugar sensitivity, we try not to give him sugar because it makes him have tantrums. He also has cloudy urine in the mornings but the doc tested his blood and said there are no kidney problems or anything. He has also in the past suffered from headaches for quite a few months and right before we were going to do an MRI, the headaches went away. He has never had a huge appetite but I am always making sure he eats and eats healthy because of all of this but I wasn't sure if anyone could provide any clues. Maybe it's nothing but my mother's instinct tells me something is not right. I just thought I would check here first to see if anyone has experienced this before asking my doc for more blood tests if we don't need to put him through that. Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

Has a UA been done? Have they checked for Diabetes?

What's a UA? A urine check? Sorry, I'm not familiar with that term but they have checked his urine in the beginning when he 1st had the cloudy urine and then probably 3 more times with the stick test and then they also sent some to a lab. Never said it was high in sugar or anything. They also drew blood and tested it for causes of the coudy urine so I am assuming they tested his kidney functions.

Have you considered going to a pediatrician that specializes in gastrointestinal and nutritional disorders? They may have some ideas of what to test for that his regular doc may not be familiar with. I don't know about what's available where you live but I am sure that a quick online search or phone calls to local clinics can help find someone or somewhere.

Has he been checked for cystic fibrosis? Usually with failure to thrive issues that's one of the things a doctor will test for. Does he have loose stools and/or constipation issues?

Re: 5 year old w/ short stature, slow growth, sugar sensitivity, cloudy urine & heada

Yes, so very sorry..... A UA is a urinalysis. You said that his urine is cloudy in the mornings? Was it a first morning sample that the doc's tested? There are different kinds of urinalysis. There's one that you collect the urine for 24 or 48 hours. How long has his urine been cloudy? My niece has juvenile diabetes and has some similar sounding problems. I know that glucose level not being in range can cause some major headaches. I couldn't really tell form your initial post if you went through with the MRI. Maybe you should have the MRI, if you haven't. Where exactly in his head are/were the headaches? Front, back, top, side, etc...Did he have any eating issues as an infant? Like swallowing or sucking? Is there a lack of appetite or is he a picky eater? What does his diet consist of on an average? How much water is he drinking in a day? Dehydration can also cause headaches. What color is his urine? I know that if it is really dark he could be dehydrated. I have a hard time getting one of my kiddos to drink enough fluids. You say he has major sugar sensitivity? Can you describe that in more detail? Niknak had an excellent suggestion about seeing those specific specialists. Sorry for the 20 questions

No, he has never been checked for cystic fibrosis as far as I know, didn't know that could be a possibility. Normal stools, never had a problem with that at all.

Re: 5 year old w/ short stature, slow growth, sugar sensitivity, cloudy urine & heada

When he was 3 he was having headaches in the bottom back of his head/ upper neck area and and it happened a lot, especially in the car when we were driving so I don't know whether that was a motion sickness thing but his doc said it's not normal to have that happen. He had headaches for at least 6 months on a daily basis and then right before we were going to schedule an MRI, he quit saying he was getting them and it was definitely not an attention thing, he definitely had them but they just seemed to go away. I tried to make sure he was eating and getting enough fluids because sometimes he does not eat or drink enough and I pretty much have to remind him to drink extra fluids. His appetite has never been huge but he does always eat. He does get distracted when eating so unless I sit there and say "you are not leaving the table till you have eaten..." he will not eat much. But if he doesn't eat much, then he is hungry a little bit later so he definitely has an appetite. And since he has had a few things going on, I have cut out the sugar and we rarely eat fast food and I really try to feed him healthy foods and a well balanced diet because of all this. No eating issues as a baby, he nursed great. As far as his sugar sensitivity goes, I found that when he would eat sugar, like candy or a donut or something with a high amount of sugar, within like one hour, he would have a major meltdown for about 20 minutes and then be fine. I finally started to connect the dots and now that he is off sugar for the most part, the tantrums have stopped. He still gets upset but nothing like the complete meltdowns he used to have. So I am assuming that there is a sugar sensitivity just because when we took it away he was fine. No need to apologize about asking so many questions, I appreciate it. As far as the MRI goes, when he was having headaches, it seemed like the logical next step and we were prepared to do it even though our insurance wont cover it so it will cost $10,000 so once his headaches stopped we figured okay, problem gone. If they come back, then we will do it. They have yet to come back. It's almost like a puzzle that I am trying to piece together and different things keep happening at different times. I am not sure if they are all related or not. Thanks

So confusing.... a puzzle indeed. Yeah, doc was right about that, it's not normal. Ok, so what about the urine again? Is that still an issue? The whole cloudy thing? What about the color of the first void? Was the sample that the doctor tested the first void of the day? If not, they can give you a container to take home and then bring it back in for them to send to the lab. Are you and dad short/small stature?

Re: 5 year old w/ short stature, slow growth, sugar sensitivity, cloudy urine & heada

Hi,
Urine is now only cloudy sometimes and yes, doc tested first urine of the morning and it was dark yellow. I am 5'5 and dad is 5'7 so we're not giants but I am not super short, dad is short but not super short. It's like stuff keeps happening at different times and then goes away and then something else happens. I don't know whether he is just allergic to sugar (is that even possible?) and because of that he was having all these symptoms like headaches and cloudy urine, and that the short stature is just that, short stature and has nothing to do with anything else. Thanks!
