7 year old with a cold sore?

Neither I nor my husband has ever had a cold sore. I've also never noticed it on any of my family members. My daughter came home from a 2 day stay at her grandparents house and has this rash thing below her lip area.

I am very strict on never sharing food, drinks or kissing my kids on the lips. My parents, however, have always kissed her on the lips since she was very little. If they had it wouldn't it have shown up on them or her by now? I see them every weekend so I would have noticed it at some point right?

She had really bad chapped lips recently but that is the last part to heal.

Sorry I'm freaking out, but I have a toddler too and my daughter doesn't understand why she can't give him a goodnight kiss on the cheek right now.

Re: 7 year old with a cold sore?

Anyway, it is a red area about the size of a quarter. It is just below her lip and at the corner of her mouth. The skin is flaky and dry but there are no bumps or raised areas. She said it just popped up overnight. Throughout the day it has gotten flakier but still no bumps/pimply areas.

Re: 7 year old with a cold sore?

Hi there
I suffered from coldsores a lot as a kid and this sound pretty big for a coldsore? Is it blistering? or golden and crispy? For a xoldsore it is usually blistery then they pop and turn a golden color and then go crusty they last untrated about 2 weeks this might just be rash of some other kind?

Re: 7 year old with a cold sore?

It doesn't really sound like a cold sore--more like a rash of some kind. Like the pp mentioned, a cold sore goes through a "blister" like stage. Your best bet would be to have it diagnosed, if it's still hanging around.

Cold sores are extremely contagious, so if that's what it is, she likely could've picked it up from one of her friends or somebody else at school, even if she doesn't share food or drinks directly. It's actually part of the herpes virus, so I hope that's not what she's got! Just make sure she washes her hands religiously while it's hanging around, and try to keep her from touching it at all.
