2 1/2 yr old has had a cold for 2 months

Hey Everyone,

My son has been trying to fight a cold for 2 months, he is on his second round of antibiotics for a sinus infection but the runny nose and the cough does not seem to be going away. I know antibiotics clear up the infection but don't actullay clear up the cold but I am just wondering if this can happen where you can't seem to shake it.

Thanks

First off get a second opinion from a different DR., if antibiotics are given too much the child's immune system is broken down. As far as the cold sores go, Zovirax and the herb lyasin(not for sure on the spelling)......too many parents jump to given their children antibiotics the first sign of a cold and wonder why the child can not beat such simple things in life as a common cold, the immune system does not know how to respond.......

Re: 2 1/2 yr old has had a cold for 2 months

It could be that he is getting exposed to different cold viruses. What seems like a long protracted cold could be several colds linked together. This is often the case if he seems to get better for a day or so and then gets worse again.

Another consideration might be allergies.

True sinus infections can be very long and difficult to treat. For sinus infections, you generally need to be on antibiotics for longer than the normal 10 days.

I hope he's feeling better soon.

has your child been on the same antibiotic?
one reason can be that the antibiotic is simply not working.
another can be that your child keeps getting a new cold and is prone to sinus infections.
a sinus infection will give the child a cough, and runny nose, headaches, etc. all the symptoms of the common cold so it's hard to tell. if your child does not get better soon
go back to the doctor ask him to have his sinuses checked and to change the antibiotic.
if this continues request a ct scan of the sinuses to make sure that everything is ok.
if you find your child still has the symptoms of a cough and runny nose but no fever or other cold symptoms, ask to be referred to an ent and an allergist.
getting answers is not always so simple, insist on seeing the specialists and getting the proper tests done.
hope you get some answers.

Apparently this has been a bad winter for colds and flu, my guess its your LO has had a few colds in a row, coughs can last up to 6 weeks and runny noses seem to last forever....as for the antibiotics I would get a second opinion from another dr a pediatric dr would be best, giving a child that young too many meds can mess with the immune systems ability to learn to fight infections. You can try a humidifier in his room at night too that might help.
I noticed you are in Canada, if you only have one dr at your office try a walk in clinic.

Drugs don't heal the body. Antibiotics wreak havoc on the body because they kill both good and bad bacteria leaving the body open to more sickness because it weakens the immune system. The doctors don't tell you this. Many foods are naturally antibacterial and antiviral. Lemons, garlic to name a couple. I give my daughter vitamins everyday and I give her echinacea this time of the year. You have to address the underlying issue: weak immune system. You need to build the immune system up naturally which is generally done with foods )vitamins and herbs.

Re: 2 1/2 yr old has had a cold for 2 months

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all your advice but I don't recall saying anything about cold sores. This has been a bad year for colds, I have had a few myself and everyone seems to be sick where I work. As for my son he hardly ever gets sick but this winter had been bad plus he is in daycare. We have our own doctor and we have also been to a walk in clinic, he eats really well so I am hoping it is just a bad season for him. I was actually thinking about allergies because it has lasted to long. I will be taking him back to our regular doctor to see what she has to say.

Thanks again

Not only cleaning products, but foods because they are mostly loaded with toxins and enviromental toxins, mercury in fillings, etc....

The misunderstanding about cold sores from many responders came from your original post.......

It seems no matter who I talk w/ whether it be an adult or an adult discussing a child the virus just is over taking. No antibiotic is going to take care of it. If you have a concern, I would request further evaluation from your doctor, not a pediatrician, but a MD or DO....

You mean Lysine. It's not a herb, it's an amino acid. It blocks the pathways of another amino acid, Arginine, which the herpes virus uses to replicate. If you have cold sores, avoid foods high in Arginine, such as nuts and chocolate, and take Lysine supplements (1250mg per day, 3000mg during an outbreak).
