My daughter's five week old son has just begun screaming. He never seems happy. He starts to drink and screams while she is trying to get him to burp. It can take up to 30 minutes to get a burp out of him. Tonight he didn't finish his 4 oz, and began screaming. We have tried everything but he has been crying for hours. He is on Similac. We just turned on a hair dryer and that seemed to calm him down. She also gives him gas drops. Could it be an alergy to Similac or is it colic. Any suggestions out there?
I would suggest to her that if it continues she call the doctor. It could be colic, but he also might need a formula change. I know a lot of people don't agree, but sometimes babies need the lower iron formula because higher iron concentrations tend to upset their stomachs. Or, he might need a different brand of type altogether. She probably should continue with the gas drops. She might also want to have him sleep upright in his carseat or swing, or on his side or tummy rather than his back if that is the way she is positioning him. Babies tend to be able to pass gas a lot better on their tummies or in an upright position.
Thanks Nancy, A change of formula is what I suggested. Two of my other grandsons drank Netramigen. She is also trying to re position him. Last night the hair dryer calmed him down.

Joan
a probroly change of formula,,
but if that doesnt do it,, try acid reflux.. ours had it and it run us ragged for 10 months before they finally did something,, constant crying,, a 30 year peditrician said he's spoiled just lay him down and let him cry,,, finally i took him elsewhere and bingo it changed in a day or two
this was happening with our second son like all the time, then some projectile vomiting joined in too. it wasn't til we changed him over to a soy based formula(isomil) that things just seemd to get better almost over night. if you do change to this and nothing changes, you really just to make certain everything is really okay, need to get him in for a VERY thorough type check up/eval from his ped doc, WITH some very basic bloodwork done too. you just never really know what going on til you get that REALLY in depth look inside sometimes.
try also interspersing his formula with just plain water too. how are his stools, really hard/pebble like or softer? is he regular with the BMs? marcia
