Yes, a bad cough can easily be allergies. Is it turning to something more or does it just remain a cough?

hi! well nearly once every 2 months he gets a cold, flu like symptoms a slight cough which gradually gets really bad. The doctor seems to think it may be asthma but i am going to take him private to get a proper diagnosis. I think it may be our dog because everytime my son stays down my parents house he comes home and guaranteed he gets really ill after about a day. I hate him being so ill all the time ;-(

Re: why does my child always get a bad cough

It sounds exactly like asthma. My son has the very exact same thing. It would happen about every 2 months (over the summer it was every month). Yes, it starts like a cold and then the very bad cough comes. He had pneumonia on his last bout so you need to be very careful if it is asthma.

My son is only 3 so he hasn't been tested for allergies yet. He was so healthy all last winter but was on his asthma meds a lot over the summer. He recently caught a little cold and next thing, he was wheezing.

What has helped us is pulmicort. I had my son on pulmicort for about 6 weeks and it was the healthiest he had been all summer. I stopped the pulmicort and about a month later he got a cold with the asthma flareup.

Good luck!

Hi again, thank you for your excellent and spot on advice! i took my son to a specialist and turns out it is asthma ;-( also allergic to dust mites. The good thing is tho we have caught it early and can now control it. The bad news is we have to re-home our dog, my sons health comes first tho so in a way it kinda seems irrelevent. Will be sad tommorrow when he goes but as he is such a big dog, he moults alot and find i have to vaccum at least 5 times a day!!!!

so with clean healthy air (no hair) and have bought anti-allergy blankets and pillows etc. Hopefully we will see a huge improvement in my sons health. My partner is being an absolute arse hole about it all and sometimes i think he prefers the dog to myself and my son, saying stuff like the dog is not goin. FOOL!!!!! how can he put a dog before his sons health?? anyway b4 i get carried away ;-) thanks again for your advice from karyn xx

Re: why does my child always get a bad cough

So sorry you have to rehome your dog. I know, it is a very tough decision, but you are right that your son's health comes first. The only thing I could suggest is if an allergy med could help your son be around your dog.

We have two cats and I would cry my eyes out if I had to get rid of them, but do realize it is a reality I might have to face. For now, we think my son's asthma is cold induced, but it doesn't mean one day the cats won't set his asthma off. Good luck to you and your son, glad I could help.
