why do kids shake their heads when they are tired

why do kids shake their heads when they are tired
I have a 5 year old that has shaken his head violently since he was about 6 months old. We have done an EEg and an MRI and there is still no explaination to why he still does this. Alot of people including his pediatrician say that he should grow out of it, but by what age does this happen? I am so scared that he is going to give himself brain damage or something.
