My ten year old daughter has had a cough every year that can last for months when she gets it and its not just in the winter it happens in the summer too.Its all day long and even wakes her up because she cant breath. The school keeps calling me saying her coughing is disrupting the other kids and i know she feels embarrassed about it. It started when she was about a year old she had the croup and was put in the hospital for three days inside a tent and i think this cough has something to do with that. We have taken her to the dr every time she has the coughing spell but he just keeps saying it is just a cough give her cough medicine and it will go away and it never works. Its a dry cough and she has no other symptoms with it just coughing that ends up making her throat sore. Does anyone have any ideas on what this could be or what i should try. I tried to get the dr to refer us to a specialist but he says there is no need they cant do anything more than him. I really need help to find her help. If you have any advise please tell me!
Nine years, good heavens! Go to a different doctor. Ideally you want a pulmonologist. If you need a referral, ask to see a different pediatrician, as this one is not addressing your daughter's problem.
Non-narcotic cough medicines are usually not effective in children, and codeine needs to be used pretty carefully. But a chronic cough is usually either asthma or acid reflux, which are both treatable.
My son is same way. Part of reason is the medicine he is o, other half of reasons post nasal drip. I didn't think it was that for a long time but it's basically mucus dripping down his thrat, it "tickles" and he coughs. The school always phones, worried he's contagious so I hear you! Could be allergies too. Good luck.
