seven year old daughter with ADHD constantly cries and has meltdowns and seems sad
Hi...I need help. My 7 YO daughter who has been diagnosed with severe ADHD this year cries at the drop of a hat. Wether it's over clothes, not being able to find something, etc. It's EVERYTHING. I have tried to be really patient and I am not easy going with her. I do discpline and even tho she gives it to me, I do not let her get her way. I have tried every form of discipline and nothing seems to work. Her doctor said that it's not her ADHD medicine but a maturity thing. She also seems to be sad most of the time and doesn't like anyone watching her have fun. She gets embarassed easily and gets frustrated at any little thing. My next step is counseling. I just want her to be happy and enjoy her childhood.

ADHD actually IS a maturity thing. Emotionally, ADHD children tend to be about 3 years behind their peers. They're plenty smart, they just don't have the emotional control, so she may cry or get upset more easily than most seven-year-olds.
Also, it may be that school is very hard for her. How is she doing in school? Does she get in trouble a lot? Are the other children cruel to her?

It could be maturity, and it could be her medication. When we took our son off of Focalin, the tantrums and anxiety behaviors decreased immediately. Now, months later, they are starting to return. The meds did not cause the behavior, but made the emotional element worse, even though he was sitting still, and behaving otherwise. We are going to look into a different type of med, or a combination that includes maybe an anti anxiety. Your daughter sounds depressed/anxious as my son is- however, we had him seen by a psychologist, who feels that is related to ADHD, and called it emotional regulation, which he struggles with. I am going to look into therapy for my soon too. I hope things get better- I know how you feel

Hi some school lunch programs decreased this type of problem by stopping the sweet desserts and sugary things being fed them. It decreased things like aggression, depression ADD and ADHD if I remember corrrectly. Perhaps it is worth a try anyway, just from the standpoint that sugar lowers the immune system anyway and one is more likely to get a cold or the flue.
