Hi my son just turned 16 months and around 12 months. we were out and a lady asked me if my son had a strabismus and I of course said No and had no idea what she was talking about...Well over the next week or so, I looked it up and started researching and watching him and noticed his right eye seemed abit lazy..As the past few months have gone on I have noticed it now rolls in towards his nose alot...Especially when playing or looking at something up close...My husband just started a new job and so for this reason only, We are waiting for the insurance to kick in, But I am pretty sure that he has this and am wondering if I Should just skip taking him to his Peditrician (would be a new one-Since his Pedi closed her practice 3 months ago) or go to a specialist straight away? Any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated! I read online they patch young kids and I wonder how this can work since they would just pull it off (at least mine would) I dont know what I need to do and am concerend about him! Does anyone out there know if they have support groups for these kids, So they can be around and see other kids like them, So they dont feel diffrent! I am in the Austin Tx area if you know of any! Okay Thanks for Listening and any advice!
Hi not in your country so cannot help you with that. My son had the same thing also called lazy eye. When he was 2 they started patching his eye for a couple of hours a day. That did not make enough of a difference so he had surgery when he was 4. It was a quick surgery with short recovery time and very successful. The hardest part was trying to get the antibiotic eye drops into his eye four times a day after surgery for 3 weeks, he would see the bottle and run.
Thanks so much for the reply, Makes me feel a little better...I cant wait to get our insurance, It shouldnt be to much longer since we have already submitted our paperwork...I cant imagine making a toddler wear an eye patch, How do they keep them from tearing it off all the time...LOL...Also How is your son doing now after he has had the surgery?
Funny enough he more or less left it alone after the first couple of times he wore it. He is doing great after the surgery which was 4 years ago. You would never know there had been anything wrong with his eye. Try not to worry about it, it is very common and the surgery is done on a day case. It will take far more out of you than your son lol.
My daughter also had this. She was patched for about 2 months, each eye every other day. She was 4 when she was being patched. It didn't work so she had surgery in November 2011. Everything is good now! No turning in!
