My daughter who is 8 told her dad she had a headache yesterday when she came home from school. He had her take two of my low dose baby aspirin. He did not know that children are not supposed to take them. I tried to research and it seems like it's only a problem if they have the flu or chicken pox. I was exposed to the flu a few days ago and of course, have been around my daughter.
Should I be concerned? Is there something I can do to prevent Reye's? How likely is it to happen?
I am sure she will be OK. One dose should not do any harm. Aspirin used to be given to kids a lot; back in the old days it was all there was. Bad reactions were pretty rare. Sera
I used to sneak and eat aspirin like it was candy when I was a kid, and so did a lot of my friends (they made it taste so good back then!). We're all fine. I think your daughter will be fine, too.
@ esker, and WhatWasIThinkin (love your screen name, btw)....
LOL, I often wonder if the whole aspirin-Reye's syndrome link is real or just another thing to scare us parents into buying the more expensive products to treat our children's illnesses...... of course, I'm one of those crazy conspiracy theorists, so what do I know???
Many people who have lost family members to Reyes' syndrome would take offense to your comment, even if it was made in jest! Some people survived, but had with major residual effects from it! My husband was one of the lucky ones. He has minimal deficits.

My comment was directed at the supposed "link" between aspirin and Reye's syndrome, not at anyone who has it, has had it, or has lost anyone to it. They don't know the exact cause of Reyes'. They point to aspirin, but they really don't know. I'm sorry your husband has to deal with that.
