I Don't Want Chronic Fatigue But Am Really Afraid, Please Advise.

I am usually a long-distance cycling and high energy person,

However in the spring I was struck down in a couple of days by something that was suspected to be Glandular Fever but never shown in blood tests. I was left feeling like a Zombie with a clear mind but no body strength. After about six weeks all my symtoms disapeared within about a week.

Over the summer I have been almost back to full strength, cycling 200 km a week, working full-time etc. Then in October over night all my strength went again. Now for 8 weeks I have all the symptoms of CFS with the main difference from last time being the brain-fog that people often talk of. Eventually last Wednesday I signed myself off work after trying hard to keep my routine became too much.. Now my doctor has mentioned the potential for CFS but said that it was probably from damaging my immune system by over exercising after a virus. So please if someone would answer some if my questions I would be delighted.

Firstly, what other things are their other than CFS, I mean is there such a thing as viral fatigue with the same symptoms that passes after a couple of months? Typing these symptoms into the internet always brings up CFS but surley there other forms of burnout and damage to the body that give shorter term similar symptoms. I mean am I potentially making it worse for myself by stressing about CFS symptoms when I could actually just do with a rest? It is annoying that the Internet always seems to lead to the worst case scenario.

Secondly, my main outward symptom is I am looking awful. By the end of each day I have enourmous bags under my eyes - most of what I read about CFS says there are no outward symtoms.

I suppose my main question is could it be that, and I hope that I have something else that will not go on for as long as CFS??

Hi HowieMel,
I am sorry you are feeling so bad. You are like me and like to look stuff up. I think it's important to know the possibilites and powerful. Since you can't always rely on the mdeical profession.

First, your symptoms do match. But I myself had to go through many test first. Even now my general doc will only commit to a 99.9% dx of cfs. He is sending me to a specialist. I have had ms ruled out, cancer, tumors, every blood tst. Ct's and an mri. Of course I do have mitral valve prolapse, and Hashimoto's thyroid disease. But these are not the cause of my awful symptoms.

I too look really bad on my bad days. Other times I look completely fine when I feel like I must have cancer or something. So this is so hard to say.

My blood was positive for EBV and CMV. That's it. I hope you don't have cmf. I hope it is something that you can get over.

Just keep searching and fighting for a dx. I know it's hard, especially the days when you can't seem to get out of bed let alone another doc visit. But just keep going.

I hope to God you find out soon. Good luck!!!!!!
Deena

p.s. It is hard to get many repkies on this site. But I can't find another site for cmf.

Howie Mel,
All I can say to you is Don't Give Up in your search. I too hope you don't have CFS.
I have alot of down time & am still trying to cope w/it; both physically & emotionally. I have only understood myself as being highly active & able to do what I want. It is truly hard to not have energy that you are used to having.I want to hold up a sign above me that reads, "not really me!"I haven't accepted the fatigue & keep telling myself...1 more day of rest & I'll be better tomarrow...There are alot of "tomarrows",but I do have to say one day I'll wake up & I'll have "clarity" & some energy to get stuff done.(today is that day~YEAH!!) I just can't count on the day or how long it'll last.Knowing that atleast I have that, gets me through each day.I do as much as I can ,Sit ,then when I can ,do more.I feel like I'm fighting something & I am so physically exhausted (as if having the flu that lasts forever).I've noticed that as I've read CFS symptoms aren't all the same, but there are similarities.
If I remember right...allergies can cause bags (tiredness too).Have you had any allery testing?
Today, is my "good day" & my son immediatly noticed how "Awake" I looked today. It made me so happy & sad at the same time. For me~ my eyelids droop& i look exhausted...we may just show our fatigue in different ways...
Keep reading!Keep searching!Keep talking to your dr!
Even if you do get dxd w/CFS...remember it's not the worst thing to be dxd with.CFS can resemble other things so keep your dr. informed.I am interested about the excersing with or after a viral infection.Maybe your dr. has a point there.
Good Luck to you!

Re: I Don't Want Chronic Fatigue But Am Really Afraid, Please Advise.

HI Howie,

Have you been tested for Epstiein Barr Virus? Or Cytomeglovirus?

Don't know all of your symptoms...do you have pain? Fevers, swollen lymph nodes, sore thoart, mucels ache? or are you just tired?

Epstein Barr Virus is what they call mono...but when it keeps occuring like so many of us have reacurrances then we are told we have Chroinic Fatique ....

The good news is, IF this is what you have it can be put back into remission...we alllll have these virus's in our systems...depends on our immune system how they affect us...most people have it when were kids then it goes into dormancy...some of us when our immune system breaks down it flares up agan....

Have your doctor..or find a doctor that will work with you...not one that is going to push this aside and start pumping you up on antidepressants and uppers...or unnecessary things....have them test you for Epstein Barr, CMV ...and any other herpe virus's...yes these are in the herpe virus family....IF you have one or both of them , Valtrex is being used to put these back into remission...I am on 1,000 in the am...and 1,000 in the pm. within a couple of weeks a big portion of my symtoms went away...

Also have you had your thyroid and the t-3 , t-4 checked...??

Here is some Doctor's names, they are also researchers into fibro and CFS..and some other conditions....search and you'll find them...I have seen people get well and I am serious about that from doing these protocols...your every day M.D. is NOT trained to help anyone with fibro, CFS...they willl give you pills to cover the symtpoms and not help cure you...

Read up on Dr. Michael Powell Fibromyalgia Treatment Center....and also
Dr. Charles Stratton Fibromyalgia and CFS....and the Vanderbilt Protocol...

There is a bacteria that ALLLL of us have in our systems....once again it is how our immune system deals with it...it is called Chlaymidia pneumoinae...(spelling is off this am) they are finding that this bacteria seems to be the key to MANY conditions, m.s. fibro, demitia, alsheimers, and the list goes on...this is being brought out to other doctors attention more and more..but still isn't that well known...these conditions are being treated with antibiotics..Great reading and Good informtation....it is worth learning about this...

I had lyme for many many years and went mis-diagnoised cause no one wanted to treat me with a simple course of antibiotics...but they sure didn't mind pumping me up with 14 different pills at one time for many years...crazy....then I learned about this bavteria couple years ago...and Dr. Powell is the key to the last of this mess....

I hope you find anwers soon...DON'T LET ANY DOCTOR TELL YOU THAT YOU HAVE TO LIVE LIKE THIS....cause you don't!!!

Hope this has helped....have a great day!!

Jodie

Re: I Don't Want Chronic Fatigue But Am Really Afraid, Please Advise.

Yes I was tested orignally for the Epstein Barr mono virus but nothing turned up in two blood tests even though I had all the symptoms of Glandular fever. My doctor seemed to think last spring that due to a very sore throat that this started from a Streptococal virus. The main hope I have is I was ill for six weeks last spring then over about a week ALL my symptoms disappeared and I went back to working, swiming, cycling and feeling as I had before. In fact as I have said I am a 28 year old man and an Edurance athelte when I am on top form. Then literally overnight in October I woke and felt the same again.. That was 8 weeks ago and my symptoms are now much worse and for much longer than they were the first time! Can simply being "run down" produce this sort of effect, or mybe the results of over doing it? Yet I have and yesterday my doctor agreed the exact symptoms of CFS which thankfully he is taking seriously. He offered to refer me to a specialist but I said I would hold on until after Christmas as I dont want to come to any long-term conclusions about my health again. Especially as I am hoping it will just pick up again like last time. Also my Doctor still agrees I have the symtoms of Glandular Fever so he has added that on to my next blood test for after Christmas. Yet, my last set of Blood tests were clear apart from a Liver anamoly which caused him to ask me if I had taken performance enhancing drugs (I hadn't). Bascially it is just a matter of taking it one day at a time and seeing how things go. Scary time and thanks for any comments / help.

Well,

I do not have "CFS", however I have seen many people ward off the symptoms with careful control of diet and chemical use in the home.

I would go to a nutritionist, and back to your doctor to get a full blood panel for the nutritionist to check out.

This kind of problem can be the result of many things not just CFS.

Doctors are ill equipped to resolve dietary problems and missing a key nutrient, while it may show up in a full blood test, it is almost always overlooked by medical doctors, but taken very seriously by clinical nutritionists.

Wow, your story sounds identical to mine. Unfortunately mine started last October. I was 28 at the time although not a cyclist, i was in decent shape. One day I just felat totally warn out like I had not slept. This has continued everyday since. I have been tested for everything under the sun and still nothing. I look like total crap and could go to sleep at anytime. I just have no energy at all. I dont know where to turn from here. Every night I just hope tomorrow will be the day but it has yet to come.

Re: I Don't Want Chronic Fatigue But Am Really Afraid, Please Advise.

HowieMel, I hate to say this and I don't mean to scare you, but I also have a VERY identical story to yours. Mine occured when I was 26. I was working very hard at my job, working very hard at the gym, going out until all hours of the night to have drinks with my friends, and was involved in a rather destructive relationship. One day, something just gave in. I went to the gym one night as I always do and felt fine all the next day until around 7pm and I was hit with tremendous fatigue, faintness, anxiety, depression, soreness, and malaise.

This went on for about 10 days and I stayed home from work and the gym during this time. Slowly, but surely, I got started getting better and feeling better. Before long, I was just about my old self again, but not quite. I could still feel that something was not quite right.

So, I decided that I would ignore it and go back to the gym and lift weights. Well, I nearly passed out right there in the gym. I managed to drive myself home and get into bed, but from that day on everything changed. All those symptoms I had just came back stronger, plus the brain fog set in just like you described and I had a very profound intolerance to a lot of foods and medicines.

I had to totally give up the gym and it wasn't long before I could no longer tolerate working any longer due to the tremendous fatigue, anxiety, and brain fog. I gave up working in November '03 and haven't gone back since. In that time, my symptoms waxed and waned, but generally have gotten worse over time and no doctor has ever been able to pinpoint the cause.

They did find that I had a positive antibody test to Lyme Disease, but after over 3 months of consistent IV and oral antibiotic treatment, there was no relief of symptoms, so we discontinued treatment. It could have been a false positive or an infection that still showed since I was a child.

So, I'm afraid that your story does look a lot like mine and I was eventually diagnosed with CFS, but this may not be the case for you. I encourage you to get all the available tests you can and see several different doctors. Things like sleep studies, MRI's, infectious blood work, and adrenal and thyroid functions should all be done before considering CFS.

I hope this helps you some.
