Unhappy I Have Felt Tired for Years!

Hi, I am a Grade 9 student who has been tired almost every day since Grade 4 or 5 (I can't even remember when it started). Since then, there have only been 3 days when I have felt refreshed. Two of those days were in Grade 6 on a cruise, 1 was on a vacation at a hotel in Grade 7. I'd like to point out that the cruise lasted a week and the other vacation is something I do annually for a week, with no success since.

I have Asthma, and took Symbicort daily for 2 or 3 years, until a couple of months ago. Recently, I have been taking Singular daily, and Symbicort occasionally.

I usually go to bed at 10:30, and wake up for school at 7:15. It takes me 30-45 minutes to fall asleep. I can't go to bed earlier because I'm not tired enough (ironically). I make sure to avoid screens an hour before bed. Throughout summer breaks I have woken up early and late, trying everything from 7-11 hours of sleep, to no avail. I have even tried an iPod Touch app that wakes you up in a light stage in your sleep cycle.

I took a blood test and it was confirmed that I have enough iron. I have tried multiple multi-vitamins and they have not made a noticeable difference.

Sometimes I feel depressed but only because of the fact I'm always tired. I experience aches and pains occasionally.

Please help, I've all but given up. Thanks in advance!

Re: I Have Felt Tired for Years!

It's possible you could be experiencing what I am, which is Atypical Depression. Do a few searches online for Atypical Depression and see what you think.

Like you, when my exhaustion started, I took a vacation. After being away for 4-5 days, I started feelign better. My energy was back, I could run again and felt great at 6-7 hours of sleep. However, once I came back home and got back into my groove things went back to being exhausted. This, was Feb of 2006. I have yet to find a release from this. I have tried every SSRI on the market, both SNRI's and now Wellbutrin. Nothing seems to work. My next step is an MAOI, possibly provigil.

I would make sure that your doctor tests your thyroid, as well. Another thing you should consider is a sleep study.

Best of luck in your quest to find your "normal self" again!

Re: I Have Felt Tired for Years!

Anxiety & Depression could both cause fatigue. Please look up Anxiety symptoms. You need to talk to your doctor about this... Low Thyroid & Low vitamin D could cause the fatigue also. You may feel better on vacation cause you were outside soaking up the vitamin D or the vacations relieved stress (anxiety). I hope you start em feeling better son
