Anyone know about Tarlov's cysts ??

I just learned that my ladylove has Tarlov's cysts from her T-10
clear down to her sacrum ( showed up in an MRI). They form
around spinal nerve roots and can cause chronic pain which she
has had for decades. I find I learn more from people who have
health issues than from search engines so I am seeking info from
anyone familiar with this condition. Please talk to me.

chronic pain from Tarlov's cysts.

I just learned that the gal I love has Tarlov's cysts, several at
each vertabrae from T-10 (between shoulder blades) continuous
down to her sacrum. It showed up in an MRI at Mayo Clinic.
She has had decades of chronic pain and is at the limit of opioids
allowable. Can't sleep properly or eat properly. Not much seems
to be known about this condition. Anyone out there ever heard
of this condition? If so, please write.

Re: Anyone know about Tarlov's cysts ??

I have several small cysts in my lumbar area. They tend to bother me the worst when I have a lot of muscle swelling or if I just over do it. I had to have a lumbar fusion from S-1 up to T-3 over a year ago and the Tarvlov Cysts seem to ease up with Topamax. Unfortunately if she has other problems they seem to go hand in hand.

Re: chronic pain from Tarlov's cysts.

Hi,
My understanding of them is that most of them are not painful, but it sounds like that has not been your gf's experience.

Re: Anyone know about Tarlov's cysts ??

Thank you so much for your info. She has several other problems
mostly digestive which could be caused by the cysts I think.
What is Topamax?

Re: chronic pain from Tarlov's cysts.

[removed]
I have found thru my
participation on other boards and forums that I can actually
learn a lot more from people who have the problems than from
the medical folks who see the problems from the outside mostly.
Funny, the condition is pretty common and only a few actually
have serious problems with them. We just don't know how many
of her many problems can be attributed to these cysts.

Re: chronic pain from Tarlov's cysts.

Topomax is a drug that is used for many, many different things i.e. BiPolar disorder, nerve pain, seizures, migraine prevention, etc.

I use it for Migraine Prevention and a Seizure Disorder. Topomax can also have some serious side effects such as rapid weight loss, neurological defecits which can be permanent, kidney stones. It's really one of those drugs that you need to talk to your dr. about and way the pros and cons before taking it.

I started it and within 4 months was in the hospital having a 13mm kidney stone surgically removed and currently have a second stone being monitored. I've taken topomax for 1 1/2 yrs now. The neurological problems are also prominant, not being able to rememer words, not being able to voice things, even though I can say them in my brain, etc.

Good luck.
